Sony Developing ‘Venom’ Spin-Off From ‘Spider-Man’ Films

The good news is Sony is eyeing a “Venom” film based on the crazy cool nemesis of everyone’s favorite webslinger. The bad news is…well didn’t Venom kind of suck in “Spider-Man 3”? Alright, let’s put that aside for the moment and concentrate on the still undeniably cool news. (Click here to read what Venom’s creator and writers think of the news.)

Hollywood Reporter says that Sony “is hoping the [Venom] could serve as an antidote to the aging ‘Spider-Man’ franchise in the way that Fox has used Wolverine to add longevity to its “X-Men” franchise.” An intriguing idea to breathe new life into a franchise that desperately needs something, I would say.

But apparently it’s an idea that might not do much for Topher Grace’s career. Despite starring as Eddie Brock/Venom in “Spider-Man 3,” the studio is said to be considering other options. States the paper, “Casting also is no simple matter. Topher Grace played the character in the film, but agents have been eyeing the role for their clients, as Sony is not yet convinced the actor can carry a tentpole picture.”

“Mean Creek” writer Jacob Estes had been commisioned to write a “Venom” script for the studio apparently but now “the studio is considering going in a different direction from Estes’ script and is seeking writers for a new draft.”

What do you think? Can Venom sustain a film all on his own? Should Spidey make a cameo? And should Topher return? It’s your turn.

I'm not too pleased about changing the actor. I mean i know venom sucked in Spidey 3, but it wasnt Topher's fault.

For christs sake dont let eric foreman touch another marvel role. Im obviously a huge spidey fan, and.... well, he just sucked.... sucked balls. no good, a worthless piece of garbage. Topher grace as an actor, is pretty good, he just butchered the role of venom.

Not so much maybe as eddie brock, but as venom himself. Topher is too small, and not built enough to play such a character. Dolph lundren from back in the day would make a good venom,, providing he spoke good english and wasnt as stupid. IDK, i was definetly dissapointed, considering they did such good casting for previous spidey villains (Green Goblin, Dock Ock, even harry was good, untill the third one where a bump on the head turned him apparently retarded, he sure as hell acted like it)

As far as carnage, i dont think carnage will be able to come into play until they make a rated "R" spidey type flick. anything else will dumb him down way too much.

Yes i'll admit that Topher Grace wasnt really big enough to play Venom, but to be fair, thats not the worst thing Sam Raimi did to the Spiderman franchise. I mean Tobey Macguire wasnt exactly the perfect match for Spidey (Peter Parker wasnt that geeky, he was smart (in fact, way smarter than in the movies), but not a loser/geek), and i dont know why, but they seem to love killing off the villains in these comic book movies. If killing off all of Spiderman's biggest villains doesnt screw up a franchise, i dont know what does.

Yes, it is true that peter parker could be a little less geeky in the movie, and the while "dark spider-man" phase in spiderman 3 was pathetic. Instead of being overly agressive and short tempered, they made him some kind of cocky dumbass, idk wtf they were thinking. Other than that though, i'd say tobey filled out the part of peter parker half decent, and the part of spider-man very well. I like his cheesy ass comments that he makes as spider-man, he pulls them off really well.

And it is retarded how they keep killing off all the villains, thats just a dumb move right there. I wouldn't have minded seeing a sequel with Dock ock again, i think he was fantastically done, though of course they cheesed it up at the end by making him become "good" again, and of course, killing him off.

Like i said before, i'd like to see a rated "R" spidey flick. That would just open up so much more creative windows. And possibly get a new director, because spidey 3 was a huge dissapointment, and i think itll be hard to recover from a flaming bag of crap like that.

Columbia Pictures is currently in talks with Gary Ross (Pleasantville) to direct the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off feature Venom and rewrite the script.

Ross will reportedly start work on Venom as soon he's done with his rewrite of Spider-Man 4. Since the last we heard about the Venom script was that Zombieland's screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick had submitted a draft to Marvel and Sony, it's safe to assume that Ross will be rewriting their work. Venom should hit theaters in 2011, but it seems unlikely that Topher Grace, who brought the role to life in Spider-Man 3, will pick up the mask again.

I'd definitely see it, just for being a fan of Venom, definitely needs a different actor. Eddie was constantly shown lifting weights, he wasn't anywhere close to the size of Peter in the comics and while he was bigger with the symbiote out in the comics he barely changed sizes in the movie. I was very disappointed in the whole design of venom in spidey 3. Hopefully they get it right this time
