*ONLY A SHORT SEGMENT IN THE BEGINNING HAS ENGLISH SUBTITLES, THE REST IS SPOKEN ENGLISH*

SANTA'S WORKSHOP takes you to the real world of China's toy factories. Workers tell us about long working hours, low wages, and dangerous work places. Those who protest or try to organize trade unions risk imprisonment.

Low labour costs attract more and more companies to China. Today more than 75% of our toys are made in China. But this industry takes its toll on the workers and on the environment.

The European (and American) buyers blame bad conditions on the Chinese suppliers. But they say that increasingly hard competition gives them no option. Who should we believe? And what can you do to bring about a fairer and more humane toy trade?

May I ask what term you would believe to be right/correct??

slaves are not paid, these women are being paid for their work. they know how much they will be paid and continue to work there . its not slavery, but it is exploitation of the poor which is also pretty bad.

If you had no money no home nothing, and your are offer 2 choices : 1. To Die Of Hunger, 2. To Live And Work All Your Life For Next To Nothing... Which One Will You Choose? , Is This Any Different From A Person Pointing A Gun At Your Yead? Isn't This Even Close To Slavery? Some Slaves Were Paid Every Day As Well As Regular Workers, But Not Whit Money, Whit Other Stuff, They Didn`t Had Any Other Choice How To Live There Lives, Do The Chinese Workers Have Any Other Choices?

The Us itself is not at fault, but the governers are... like it or not.
The US controls a substancial part ofthe economy... house pricing in the Us effects my mortgage here in spain and if you dare deny it you are an imbecil. Everything that comes out the Us effects the globe, one way or another good bad.. i dont blame the people, its not partly our fault... There are people out there that understands the way the world really works and i speak to those people who one day will stand united and take action

'house pricing in the Us effects my mortgage here in spain and if you dare deny it you are an imbecil.'
I think what you are trying to say is that the bank rates and other countries purchasing the US's debt affect the interest rate at which you borrow money to buy your house. If there is a better rate of return in our housing market, then people/companies move their money here, which in turn causes your borrowing rates to increase. The actual price of the house is inconsequential. But I wont call you an imbecile

There is plenty wrong with your statement, but Im going to assume that english isn't your first language, hence the discrepancy, and leave it at that.

1-I am not sure the actual conversion of yaun to dollars. But if a breakfast in China only costs 1 yaun, and the workers are making 300-800 yaun a week, then I doubt they are making less money then the cost of living. If this was true slave labor, they would be doing it for free.

2-How is this any diffrent then the 2.something illegle mexican immigrants living in the US today, making less then minimum wage?

3-The girl said they were working 120-140 hours a month. Cry me a fucking river. A normal full time worker in America works 180 hours a month before they are even elligible for overtime. I read an article sometime back that stated Americans work more hours then any other country on average. In America we work 40-45 hours a week, and in Euroupe it was something like 25-30 hours a week. And in Asia, it was like around 30 hours a week. This documentary was done by a British news people, so that explains why they think the workers are working too much.

4-65% of Americans live under the poverty level, the same 65% work for or below minimum wage, can't make ends meet. Is there some documentary boo-hooing the fact? No. It's life. For good or for bad, it's what it is. And on a side note...Does anyone ever stop to think why crime is more rampid in the USA then in any other country in the world? When other countries look at us, and think about the American dream, they are looking at that 45%...not the other 65%.

5-They were talking about workers who were injured or even died in factory fires. Do you know how many blue-collared workers,(Not just in the US, but in the world), get injured and die on the job every single day? Hundreds, if not thousands. So boo-hoo. Roofers fall off roofs and die all the time. Taxi drivers get in car accidents and die all the time. Carpenters accidently cut off thier fingers, all the time. What is so unique about thier situation?

6-China is a 2nd world country. YA, they may have some good stuff going on in the major cities, but in the rural and other parts of China it is rampid with poverty. These women work in these factories, weather the wages are fair or not, because in a country like China, what other better thing could they do? Farm rice? This whole documentary is annoying to me.

7-On another thought...Thousands apon thousands of Americans lose work and become unemployed all of the time because of outsourcing to companies in India and China. What the American worker does for $2,000 a week in America, the Chinease and Indian workers will do for $200 a week,(American ddollars). Why do they do that? Because that is more money then they would ever see in a life time other-wise. Why? BECAUSE THE COST OF LIVING IN THOSE COUNTRIES IS SO LOW. Recently I read, that even though we are paying $3.50 a gallon a gas, in most other countries they are still paying $0.20 and $0.30 a gallon.

8-China is one of those countries that get free healthcare. That makes it all worth it to know if your child gets sick, you can take them to a dr who will make them better. To me, that makes it all worth it.

9-God bless the USA.

like to point out a few other things, the companies that are hiring those girls in the doc were mostly european companies from places like switzerland and germany. last i checked they were not run by the us or george bush. also in the US a good lawyer or doctor works about 90-100+ hours every week and both those professions help people. if you compare them to these girls who work 30 hours a week sitting down putting arms on dollys and stuffing in teddy bears its not so bad then add in free dorm rooms to sleep in its pretty economical. yes these poor girls are being exploited but they are not slaves and its not work your life away or die.

120-140 hours a month ehh?
Thats a part time job for many of us here in America.
