QUOTE
After 40 years, man is preparing to return to the Moon. But this time the astronauts won't just land on the Moon - they plan to stay.

From his office in Nevada, Dennis Hope has spawned a multi-million dollar business selling lunar real estate.

But scientists believe the real prize is trapped in the Moon's rocks. It contains large deposits of an extremely rare gas called Helium-3. Could Helium-3 be mined and used as a new source of almost inexhaustible, clean and pollution-free energy on Earth? Whoever succeeds in transporting Helium-3 back to Earth could solve the world's energy crisis.

Who will win what has been dubbed the second Moon race? And should we be exploiting the Moon's valuable resources at all?

thanks...

i wonder who that guy bought the moon from in the first place to give him right of ownership and the option to sell? sometimes americans just piss me off
chikkah
What an amazing documentary! Definately makes you think.

Like about the guy who is selling Lunar Real Estate? Who the hell gave him permission to do that? That would be something that the goverments would all have to decide on. He said he even sold it to 2 ex presidents. It makes you think.

just had to be one in the crowd...

oh and chikkah...
on the subject of the guy selling plots on the moon...
remember one thing...
there is a sucker born every minute...

Technically, that guy should be able to sell land on the moon, atleast if hes a licensed real estate agent.

The truth is, as much as i hate to admit it, the Moon belongs to the Americans, well kinda anyway. Dont forget hundreds of years ago, when people were conquering new land, they would land there and stake their claim by planting their flag in the ground. Well, the Americans kinda did that, they put the Flag in the moon, so really its an american Territory, atleast they could argue that if it ever became an issue...

Perhaps thats how the Americans will become number 1 again, they will sell that helium like the Arabs sell oil, and make tons of money....

But who is profiting from it? He is, and his company, and no one else? Meaning he's the one that owned the moon in the first place?

I agree

That works too

What the heck are you talking about? We're number 1 now, always have been, always will be. tongue.gif

Sweet! All i have to do is plant a flag and I own the territory?!?!?!?..even if someone is living there (ie. Native Americans).

Thanks for the post. Good film. I haven't heard much about H3 fussion. I don't think its even close to being economical yet, but good to keep up on what might be viable energy sources. As for that company selling lunar property, I read their sight and they refer to their legal right to sell but never explicitly state what it is. All they talk about is how they feel and public opinion. I'll wait until they start selling the ocean front property up there cool.gif

The moon does not belong to the US. It belongs to the world. And we shouldnt be mining stuff from the moon. At least not extensively. That will really fuck up the moon's gravitational pull.
Skar
Mining helium on the moon and returning it to earth would have no noticable affect in the gravitation at all. And if you were worried about the moon reaching an escape velocity this is not an option either. The equation that relates mutual gravitation has both bodies mass incorporated and the distance between them squared.

F= G[(m1)(m2)]/(r^2) G=6.67*10^-11
Sageteer
The equipment they brought from earth to mine it would probably weigh more than what they shipped away anyways.

Skars correct but it will have negative effects on the oceans and environment on earth but only after extensive mining. Anyway I am sure Mining on the moon is still gonna take some time, maby a decade or 2 maby less, maby more.

Thanks for the Doc gonna watch it now

Not only can we not mine enough to have any effect. I think you guys are under the wrong impression that they will be constantly bringing the moons regolith back here to earth. Maybe they will do that at the beginning but most likely once they get a few generators going and the whole thing is looking like a good business they will most likely put a fusion reactor on the moon and have them process the rocks up there and extract the helium 3 from them and only send back the helium 3. hellium is light.

lol rly? Humankind isn't known for taking what they need and putting the rest back. Also bringing the regolith back would be a waste even in the beginning. i meant that After EXTENSIVE mining the density off the moon MIGHT change and effect the earth when its closest to the earth and this is merely a speculation of mine, and remember the moon is not only abundant in helium 3 but also other minerals and elements to name a few; nitrogen, titanium various other metals so they will be mining for these substances too.

No.
They will bring that beast down here.
And I hope that thing"moon"is what you see or is not there but it is there or is not.
It Will fall to us all.
What is?It is our hope and love for the moonminers.I will be chanting for there "is no future" only sale.. . .

They must have had it right.
For Dinsdale.
This realy made me think about our beatiful world and all of us living in the shadow of the moon.
And I realy hope that my unborn child don`t have to see this cheesy beast ever,as i have seen it.
Thank you for this great doc.
