Full Version: Moon Dog- Anyone Else See It?

saw this wed morning about 04:30. was really cool. just wondering if anyone else got to see this.

Yeah. Seen it a half-dozen times or so - some small, some really big.
My understanding is that it is caused by moonlight reflecting in ice crystals in a cloud.

i have seen those but did not know people called them moon dogs.

it is a old belief if you see one of those on a winter night that it is sure to snow soon and however many stars you can see inside of the circle is how many days it will snow for.

Same for rain. Pretty accurate too. Maybe because I'm a country boy but I see them all the time. And it is a fairly accurate gauge of rain to come.

i beleive it is a largely local phenomenon - more to do with conditions in your area than the moon itself. not like an eclipse. seen them several times myself. beautiful pic. thanks. smile.gif

My grandma thought so too, she called it a "rainy moon" smile.gif I've seen them before, I didn't know they were called moon dogs either.
