The tone of this documentary is one of pragmatism; its central figure Dr Lynn Rogers avoids oversentimentality - but I think the images themselves weave a very heart-rending and intimate portrait.
In his 40+ years working with Black bears to understand more of their behaviour, he has used all sorts of methods - trapping, tranquilising and so on to get data on behaviour - but none of them gave him in a real insight into how they actually live. He decided to do what few others have tried and form a bond with his subjects..he was converted, when he started doing it this way.
In this documentary we get a rare glimpse into behaviour previously unseen. We see that their reputation as the ferocious beasts is unjustified, often the only jumpy movements being them hitting the ground because they are frightened...
I think this is a must see for those of you who care about animals and love beautiful images..Rogers has to balance being a researcher with keeping his "family" protected during the hunting season, and its not always a happy ending..
