I downloaded 9 in avi, burned it to disc as normal but when i put in in my divx player it came up as unrecognised codec? Any ideas, it played fine on the divx player on the computer.

1. "avi" is only the container for the codec. (xvid, mpeg4, dx50 and so on).
2. Most DivX supported DVD players require the video to be encoded with actual DivX codecs set to home theater mode. this can be achieved with dr divx

these are the most common issues with playing "avi" files with DivX supported DVD players.

Did you burn the file to the disc as just a file, or did you use a dvd burning program like Dr.Divx that encodes, puts in menus, etc, making it like a dvd you buy in the store? Sometimes when I save multiple divx/avi files to a disc (after making sure they play fine on the computer), the DVD player won't play some of them. have no idea why. So I'll then just stream them directly onto the TV from the laptop rather than burning each file to its own DVD. When I burn the file using DrDivx, never have a problem...

I just did it the same as normal. Opened divx player, imported the file and burnad it to disc. It always worked before for me, I thought it may be something to do with the player updates or something.

Yeah, it did this to me sometimes. I think it also depends on the dvd player you are using. That is why now I just convert all my avi and divx files to VOB using CovertX and burn them. This saves time if you want to burn the movie more than once since you dont have to go through the decoding process all of the time.

If it was encoded with any other format than XVID or Divx then more than likely you are out of luck.

Think of a ".avi" as a container, not a codec.

I can put a video encoded with the divx codec and mp3 audio into an avi.

or

I could put video encoded with the H264 codec and mp3 audio into an avi.

One of those would work on my stand alone dvd/divx player. One of those will not.

Just because a file has the .avi extension does not mean that the video was encoded with Divx/Xvid codecs which are pretty much what they will need to be in order to play on your standalone player.

Ok thanks guys, it was just a wierd one. I just did Santa Buddies as normal and it works fine.

That's probably because santa buddies was encoded with the proper codecs and 9 was not.
