First things first this is not an attack of the film, i can appreciate that at the time this was a massive step forward for film in general and especially the sci-fi genre.
I first watched 2001 7 years ago when i was 16 and found it a chore to watch. I have recently watched it again and still found it hard to sit through. I like the beginning scene with the apes and the monolith and was pleased to see it being as scientifically accurate as it could be but other than the scene with Hal and the aesthetic side of the film i didnt find it to be paticurlarly groundbreaking. I got very bored during the segments in space that linked alot of scenes and found that the acting during the jupiter scenes was very stiff and not really noteworty.
Let me stress i'm not knocking people who enjoyed it i very much believe film is very subjective. I am just interested to hear from people who both liked it and disliked it and why.

Well made movie for the time. You have to have a few brains in your head though to understand what it is all about.

I understood it fine, just thought it was very slow moving.

I agree that it can be tough to sit through, and leaves most people confused in the end, but aesthetically it's a fantastic film. It contains some beautiful shots, and some great effects for it's time. It also has a great and memorable soundtrack. I'd say it's more of a audio/visual experience than anything else. A great melding of imagery and sounds.
I still have yet to read the book, but I'm sure it's better than the film. Books usually are.
