Well thanks for the info JayFlix, don't know why I believed otherwise.
Could it be we have some movies posted in that format?
I for one, made one MKV post, Divx/TV/Monk, after seeing one in the thread (if I recall correctly).

So it must be for download only.

Thanks again.

MKV can indeed be streamed through this version of the divx webplayer....

DivX Plus (.mkv) video support

DivX Plus Web Player now includes support DivX Plus video (MKV/H.264/AAC). Publishers can reduce bandwidth by 20% or more while maintaining the high-quality video they've come to expect from DivX by encoding and hosting video in DivX Plus format. Why is this cool? It's simple: get better video quality, with a smaller file size.

DivX Plus Web Player 2.0 Beta

It works really well with megaupload hosted mkv files in the mrbrownee70 generator, but it is still beta so it's not perfect yet.

i have read that it is possible but i have not seen one instance of mkv streaming through the divx webplayer. i would really like to see it working though, xjanacx if you could hook me up with a working example of mkv file through the web player i would totally appreciate it.

I've tried repeatedly with MKV and not once has it worked. They either do nothing or attempt to convert and fail.

MK4 etc i can get to play/convert fine but not MKV. On the PC all is fine.

Here was the thread posted about it here...

Have you installed the divx webplayer 2.0 beta?
http://labs.divx.com/node/14711

All should stream though it fine. A lil buggy perhaps, but fine.

Here is Moon r5 in mkv format though the Mrbrownee70 generator. It's streaming for me with the new webplayer no problems. Just incase you guys might be experiencing megaupload problems I'll provide multiple hosts.

Megaupload:

Slingfile:

StorageTo:

Here's a screenshot of it streaming:

Also, I am using
Firefox 3.5
Windows Xp Pro
Divx 7 Pro Bundle (with the exception of the new 2.0 beta player)

Is this streaming for you guys as well after installing the webplayer 2.0 beta?

I think I'm right in saying that MKV is a container format much like AVI. The new compatibility introduced in the DivX Webplayer 2.0 client adds streaming of MKV files containing H.264/AAC-encoded content.

There's a download and more details about it here: http://labs.divx.com/node/14711

Yep that's the same one I linked to in my first post. You are exactly right about MKV being a container much like avi. Is the new webplayer working for you as far as streaming MKV?

An MKV file is not your regular video and audio compression format. An MKV file is an open source container format. It is a general-purpose audio and video container and a contending format to the more popular AVI and MP4 formats. With its futuristic design approach, it can provide support for a vast number of audio, video and subtitle compression formats. Its features exceed even those of AVI and MP4 files.

An MKV file contains compressed video and audio streams along with an encoder. A codec or Coder/Decoder is required to play this type of file. MKV aims to be the leading standard for multimedia container formats. It is based on EBML (Extensible Binary Meta Language), a subclass of XML.

Specifically, MKV is a Matroska file - an open source container that houses an unlimited amount of video, audio, and even subtitle data in a single file. Its primary purpose is to create a unifying or universal format for multimedia storage with the benefit of being completely open source.

i think it will take a while for the kinks to be worked out. (divx is funny like that)
i hope mkv takes the place of avi as default. i have downloaded may very HD movies, and they average 400 meg. (blue ray rips are small) i didn't know we could stream them though. thanks for this info.

Whoops, didn't see it in your post - that'll teach me for just scanning the thread! emoticon-0111-blush.gif

As I've heard a few horror stories about the 2.0 player I haven't installed it yet, so can't confirm if it works like it should. As Morpheus says, new apps seem to take a short while to get the bugs worked out of the system; I tend to wait till they're known to be stable before using 'em.

It certainly looks promising though - I'm especially liking the idea of vastly reduced file sizes and better compatibility. As soon as the teething problems get sorted I'm sure I'll be a big supporter. smile.gif

I've tested it along with Mr Brownee and a few others and it does indeed work, but this is the first beta of the new web player so it does indeed have some bugs. It's not ready for full deployment, if you will, but it does the trick if you can live with a few bugs now and then.

Bugs such as...
Takes longer to connect where the old player was almost instant.
I can't speak to how it works in IE, but in FF 3 it can cause browser crashes. Either after getting stuck on connecting, or if you close the tab while it's connecting or buffering.
As well as a few other minor things.

I uninstalled it because I rarely stream mkv and preferred the stability of the older player. However, while it was installed I found very few mkv files that wouldn't work and did use it once to stream a tv episode when the scene groups took forever to get an xvid version out and it played that time without a single flaw.

So if you're comfortable with the idea of being a beta tester and can live with a few browser crashes and random bugs, as well as have a need or preference to stream mkv files... it's definitely worth giving it a shot.
