Please don't read past the first few lines if you haven't seen the film yet...
watching Law Abiding citizen, what annoyed me the most was not the obvious narrative shift, but the kinds of ideas they portray in the films subtext.
the visual medium is obviously very powerful and the subliminal things are all there if you look for them - it never went away ...don't switch it off, switch on.
it wouldn't surpirse me if this was given help by certain government departments- i wonder if they have a black ops and propaganda film suite at the bureau, where films get shown and edits are suggested.
The main story - man is wronged, man takes on legal world to being it down - is fair enough, but look out for implied story...he dies in the end ie - the legal world can never be beaten...even though his beloved died. if theres such a thing as morailty - this is dubious in the extreme...its saying the Law will do you as well as the law decides, but your civil rights come below the law....this isn't real natural law.
the other thing that is mentioned is when he threatens to kill lots of people - it is equated with bringing philly down and the government chief lady asks that surely something can be invoked under the homeland security laws - as anyone who has a brain knows, these laws are draconian in the extreme - we're talking stasi territory - but the implication or connection is made between the security of the city and homeland security..further implications being that it can and will be used on American people too.
i don't think the film was very great - not much more than the normal - but where it was more effective was pushing the idea that what is to come is great for people.... it served its purpose for those who saw only the film.
keep your eyes open - look "around" the corners of the "film" itself.
