Full Version: Linux Broadcomm 802.11g Wireless Driver Help

For the life of me I can't figure out how to get Linux to recognize my Broadcomm 802.11g wireless card in my laptop. I've heard Broadcomm cards are a bitch to get to work in Linux plus i'm very noobish at Linux in the first place. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try to get it working?

Edit: It's just a plain jane Broadcomm 802.11g Network Adapter it says. It will recognize my broadcomm netlink gigabit ethernet adapter just fine when I plug in an ethernet cord, this is pretty shitty of Linux. Makes me very bias.

First I'd like to point out that this isnt the fault of linux or <put in the name of your distro> this is because hardwareproducers cant be arsed to make their drivers opensource or at least provide a driver for other OS' than windows.
For people who have to reverse engineer the drivers to get hardware working under linux, they're doing a great job and should be thanked.

Second, I'd like you to post some data =)
give us the output of `ifconfig` `iwconfig` `lsusb` and `lspci`, and `dmesg`.

Oh and tell us what you've tried to get em working

glad to see you giving linux a shot Hated.... this is the wireless driver issue I spoke to you about... follow daveC's steps and get him that info, he'll help get you sorted out.

Every time I restart my laptop, I have to reactivate my wireless card by going to system> Administration> hardware drivers, then highlight the broadcom driver and hit activate! Before this tho I had to install the windows wireless driver packet that converts windows wireless drivers into linux wireless drivers!
DaveC
it doesnt convert them, just allows them to be run under linux by introducing a software wrapper around the driver. ndiswrapper its called, but it doesnt work with every card, thats why I need to know some things about the card first.

you can probably solve that little problem of having to do that every reboot by writing a little shell script =P everything is doable via shell in linux

pass -a too ifconfig to see devices that are down.

The name of the distro would be great info.

If it is Linksys adapter then Cisco Systems is the culprit here, they have stated to many people they don't support our software, probably due to the fact they are part of the corporate cartel...

dmesg usually spits out error messages last so `dmesg | tail` is great for trouble shoot or `dmesg | grep error` but the whole thing doesn't hurt either

DaveC
Thanks for refining my request for information a bit =P
TheHatedMenace
Lol maaan i've been busy. Dave I'll get you that info in a little bit. The Linux version is Mint7. I'm running Linux off the CD before I install it permanently to make sure I can get this wireless issue worked out. I'm on windows now and about to run to my friend's house for a few beers but here in a little bit I'll insert the CD and run those things you guys want me to. Sorry for the wait and thanks for wanting to help me. I'll be back!

Edit: I do suppose I could install Linux on my desktop in my other room since it doesn't have a wireless card. It would probably pick up my ethernet card no problem. I do worry about being able to dual boot XP, 7, and Linux tho. . anyhow i'll run these diagnostics tonight.

The Linux version is Mint7.

humm, first release 2006/11/14, 2.0 Barbara, Ubuntu based. Focus on preinstalled Proprietary software, Java, flash, DVD etc. Basically Ubuntu with `apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras`

Forgot to mention that my broadcomm chipset driver works with ndiswrapper, but its not a pcmcia or usb/firewire adapter.

again gl,

Dave I've got ubuntu also on a disk. Had the same problem with it so I've never used it. I'm going to use this Mint real quick because I can run it from the CD without the install and run these right now. I'll get back on here on linux to read everything. I'll be right back.

Dave I've got ubuntu also on a disk. Had the same problem with it so I've never used it. I'm going to use this Mint real quick because I can run it from the CD without the install and run these right now. I'll get back on here on linux to read everything. I'll be right back.

You can run ubuntu live from cd too wink.gif
DaveC
The command is Lsusb with a small L, I miss the command Lspci (again with a small L) and gimme a sec to research some things.

Oh and I've read your conv in chat with crypto, from what I gather you've only ran from livecd, this doesnt give you the experience of how linux works. This is because running from livecd enormously slows down the system, the best is just to shrink your windows partition if it takes up the whole disk, and use about 10gigs for linux. You're gonna have to get used to googling too, as if something doesnt work, the best way to find out how you're gonna get it to work is by using the commands I just gave ya (lsusb, lspci, dmesg) and googling for specific parts of their output.

And you can change every bit of your linux install if you know how. Mouse-speed included wink.gif under mint I wouldnt know where to find it outta my head, but if you were using ubuntu (much more adult and robust because it exists longer than mint) it would be under system->preferences->mouse

edit: I've found out more about your wireless drivers, but you really need to show me the output of Lsusb and Lspci (both with small L's)

Dave I gave up man I started shrinking my partition through Linux and it was going to take wayy too long, so I canceled it and it pretty much filled up my partition and erased Windows and I had to reinstall everything. Thankfully i've got 3 computers on a network with backups of my stuff. I told myself this is the last time I mess with the comp trying to learn Linux i've no need for it anywayz. Tired of messing up somehow and having to restore my comp the way I had it laugh.gif. Thanks for trying to help me tho everyone I appreciate it alot.

DONT LAUGH AT MEEEEEEEEEEE LOL
