2009 marks both the bicentenary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. To mark the occasion, Life aims to show to the diversity of the natural world and unusual animal behaviour which has enabled species to survive.Sequences filmed include flocking red knots and horseshoe crabs in Delaware Bay, USA, cheetah in northern Kenya collaborating to hunt an unusual prey species - ostrich and a group of twenty Komodo dragons attacking a buffalo at a watering hole on the island of Rinca, Indonesia.Eagles and reindeer were also filmed in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area in Finnish Lapland.(10 part series)

In nature, living long enough to breed is a monumental struggle. Many animals and plants go to extremes to give themselves a chance.
Uniquely, three brother cheetahs band together to bring down a huge ostrich. Aerial photography reveals how bottle-nosed dolphins trap fish in a ring of mud, and time-lapse cameras show how the Venus flytrap ensnares insect victims.

The strawberry frog carries a tadpole high into a tree and drops it in a water-filled bromeliad. The frog must climb back from the ground every day to feed it.
Fledgling chinstrap penguins undertake a heroic and tragic journey through the broken ice to get out to sea. Many can barely swim and the formidable leopard seal lies in wait.

Reptiles and amphibians look like hang-overs from the past. But they overcome their shortcomings through amazing innovation.
The pebble toad turns into a rubber ball to roll and bounce from its enemies. Extreme slow-motion shows how a Jesus Christ lizard runs on water, and how a chameleon fires an extendible tongue at its prey with unfailing accuracy. The camera dives with a Niuean sea snake, which must breed on land but avoids predators by swimming to an air bubble at the end of an underwater tunnel. In a TV first, Komodo dragons hunt a huge water-buffalo, biting it to inject venom, then waiting for weeks until it dies. Ten dragons strip the carcass to the bone in four hours.

As always, Attenborough is 5-star all the way.

The Komodo hunt was brutal & i can understand why the cameraman was questioning his chosen vocation, the good news for him is that it cannot get any worse.

This is just another example of how the BBC make the best Natural History programs and all the others will forever be playing catch up.

Some of the most beautiful photography i've seen - easpecially the latest one on insects - did you see the butterflies hibernating...almost brought me to tears...strange and beautiful...forget the Twighlight saga, if you want dark and emo - this is much better smile.gif. i think its good that they can get in really close nowadays - shows how delicate it all is.
