Files must be in AVI format (i.e. not simply renamed as AVI).
To join:
1. File\Open video file\Select file
2. File\Append segment\select next part, repeat as needed
3. Leave the rest of the settings defaulted
4. Video\Video Mode\Direct Stream Copy
5. Select "Save as AVI" (button), Give file a new name. If settings have been made properly, processing only takes a few minutes.
6. Joining files may not work if the source codes on the parts are different. An error will occur if this is the case.
EDIT: Simplified instructions
To split:
1. Open VDM.
2. Drag-n-drop movie into vdm.
3. Click "file" then "save as."
4. Put a checkmark on segment output file.
5. Where it says "limit size (in megabytes) of each segment to:" put in size desired. i.e. to split a 700 MB file in two, put 350 here (actually it wouldn't hurt to put 352 because generally it ends up with a slightly smaller file then what was set).
6. Change "video mode" to "direct stream copy."
7. Name the file and click save.
The result will be two files of approx. 350 MB.
To take off time (Trim):
1. Open VDM File\Open Video File & select the file.
2. Click "Mark in" button to specify the start for processing (red circle).
3. A black up-pointing triangle will appear below the slider.
4. Move the slider (purple circle) to the end, now move it slowly to the left to remove a frame or two. This is what will make the file different from the one on the server or that was pulled.
5. Click "Mark Out" button to specify the end of the file (blue circle).
6. File\Save As, all defaults should be left untouched. Notice the "Video" section near the bottom.
7. Save to location of choice. File name should be some obscure jibberish, not the actual name of the show.
8. In the section marked Video mode: Direct stream copy should be displayed. If not, select it.
9. Leave the rest defaulted, click the "save" button & it will finish.
10. Progress meter will disappear when finished.
I think this information was originally posted by SEB.
File Size
Click on Video/Compression to select a compression codec.
It's common to use the same codec for output as is used by your input file.
* If you don't select a video codec, then you will get uncompressed RGB, which is HUGE, i.e. many GB.
