the headphone socket doesn't work anymore, sound works fine through the laptop speakers,i am assuming its a driver problem, the driver i have is a sigmaTel c audio driver which is up to date.
this has only happened since i changed from xp to windows 7.
any ideas.

Try right-clicking on the speaker icon next to the time and date in the Taskbar, and select "Playback Devices." You should see speakers and headphones as your sound devices. If so, try changing the default to headphones. Once you remove the headphone plug, it should make speakers default (and vice versa when you plug your headphones in again).

OK.

Since upgrading to Windows 7, have you upgraded your video card drivers (yeah, I know that sounds wrong, but outdated video card drivers can cause sound issues)? If you can't find drivers for Windows 7, you still might want to try the latest Vista drivers.

Are your speakers are plugged into the back of your computer, and the headphones are plugged into the front?
If this is the case, there are probably two different drivers being used - 1) on the sound card (rear), and 2) the integrated one (front).
This is common on desktop computers.

I assume you've done the standard checking the headphones in speaker jack, and the speakers in the headphone jack, right?

If your computer is as I've described you may need to go into the BIOS to see if the integrated sound card is turned on.
Another place where a problem can occur is if the sound card is set to digital speakers. This type of setting can turn off other output jacks.
And, of course, you should check the volume setting in the Control Panel to make sure nothing is muted, or set too low.
Also, check your sound card software settings.

I haven't seen Windows 7, so I can only draw on my XP experience.

i didn't upgrade it was a clean install from xp to 7.the only update i had to do was display driver for 3d.

its a laptop, done all the standard checks.

so maybe its a compatablity problem.might need the vista driver.
TheHatedMenace
Yeah Mark I know when i upgraded on my laptop I had to get all the acer drivers for vista such as my synaptics touchpad driver and the launch manager & such.
markgg
this is starting to piss me off,i ve installed more drivers with no joy, when i plug in the earphones i can hear something, like static but not if you know what i mean.hard to discribe.but still no sound.its getting to the point where i am thinking of going back to xp,i d rather not.

TheHatedMenace
What type of laptop do you have? These Acer's use the realtek hd audio manager and I know alot of toshiba's do also.
TheHatedMenace
I would think your headphones are bad because when I plug in headphones in the speaker jack i still show speakers on the playback devices also but my headphones work just fine.
markgg
headphones work fine on wifes laptop.
mine inspiron 6000

From your latest screenshot in the middle pic 'speaker properties' it's showing no jack information. I'm not sure if that's usual for the SigmaTel not to show that info, or if that's an indication that it isn't detecting the 3.5mm jack like it should.
Will do some research too and see if I can stumble onto anything. I had some headphone issues when I first got this laptop and I know how frustrating it can be smile.gif

Did a little searching and seems several are having issues after upgrading to 7.
Found one option you can try, though it seems to only work for certain ppl, but one suggestion was to try going into the BIOS and switching the settings from HDaudio to AC'97 mode. (if the option is available)
TheHatedMenace
Mine shows my jacks so I guess it's why mine works tongue.gif

markgg
went into bios no option for changing from HDaudio.
i ve tried installing different drivers, all i get is Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again.

i am pulling my hair out now.
TheHatedMenace
Damn Mark I hate to hear it. On some of the drivers I downloaded on my 7 installation I had to right click the file and run it in vista mode to get it to actually work for me. Like I would get an error on my realtek hd audio driver when I just tried to run it without setting the compatibility to vista sp2. Have you tried this?
markgg
yes,yes,fecking yes,its working.
i ve been trying to download the realtek audio driver but each time it wouldn;t let me install it,i thought i d deleted the file.so while going through the Internet cafe jan posted a driver manager so i downloaded.updated the drivers,i was surprised to see the realtek driver in the update list.realtek somehow installed fine, checked the earphones and works perfect.

it still says no jack information available.

guys thanks for the time and effort, much appreciated.
TheHatedMenace
Awesome Mark glad to hear you got it working! 5 stars for Jan17!

Edit: Ahhh I see Mark realtek just released a new driver for windows 7 on october 28th. I like this program it's handy.

Congrats markgg! hurray.gif
For something that should just be automatic, that sure was one difficult problem.
Glad you got it sorted out.
