I am using Ubuntu 9.04 the Jaunty Jackalope, and I have been having a terrible time getting divx videos to stream properly. I am using Mozilla ver. 3.0.14 and have all the divx plug-ins added to it. But every time I go to stream a divx videos, the player won't let me pause or change the position within the video. I have looked in tons of Ubuntu help areas with no luck, any help with this matter will be greatly appreciated!

ah this problem is very old and very known. What divx streaming plugins are you exactly using? those from totem? or mplayer? mplayers embedded player tends to work better for divx, but it still isnt as good as the divxplayer of windows. Let me digg up one of my older posts about this up for ya
edit: cr*p that was a tutorial of how to use veohtv under linux.... well give me some time to do some research, and I'll write a guide for this too, for as far as I can solve it
edit: some initial research points out mplayer still is the way to go, I'll try this out, and write a guide as soon as I'm running buntu again

Thanks for the reply! I've tried several plugins, the mplayer does play the videos but as far as pausing the video or changing my place in the video I've had no luck! I've got the Totem 2.26.1 plugin, that seems to start up mplayer regardless if it's enabled or not!

yeah the streaming divx support is a bit poor. Have you tried the vlc player mozilla plugin? I have never tried it, but it might work for you
like I said, when I have the time, I'll run some tests and write a little guide about my findings.

Thanks again for the reply Dave! It's giving me some ideas to try, just no luck with any of them haha!
Yeah I have tried every player that I can find. The only two that I have that will even play the divx files are 'Windows Media Player Plugin 10(compatible;totem)' and 'Divx Web Player version 1.4.0.233'. These two will actually play the divx files, but still lack the ability to pause or move through the video. Both plugins use the totem 2.26.1 player to play the videos.
Here's a list of my plugins:
flashplugin-alternative.so mplayerplug-in-dvx.so mplayerplug-in-rm.banned
libtotem-cone-plugin.so mplayerplug-in-dvx.banned mplayerplug-in.so
libtotem-gmp-plugin.so mplayerplug-in-qt.so mplayerplug-in-wmp.so
libtotem-mully-plugin.so mplayerplug-in-qt.banned mplayerplug-in-wmp.banned
libtotem-narrowspace-plugin.so mplayerplug-in-rm.so mplayerplug-in.banned
I have checked every linux/ununtu forum out there and all the information dates back to 2008 as the most up-to-date info. I have even tried the VLC player with no luck as it doesn't even recognize the divx as a video file.
It's getting to where I'm kind of starting to miss having Windows on my laptop, and that's sad news!

Hello

ok#1 after you first install and update always-> sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
vlc is perfect for ripped vids because it has a sound track adjustment setting that will let you match the sound to the video if they are out of sync (tools->extended settings->synchronisation) if you didn't know
for just the codecs (for some strange reason) ->sudo apt-get install w32codecs
I would like to get vlc firefox plugin but i havn't tried because i would have to remove some things which might break something and don't have the time to fix... much rather just enjoy.
hope this helps

interesting... not sure there is a difference since the stream is just a buffered file which is read the same way as a local file, or a remote file on a local network with a http protocol instead of ftp or nft or other.

Agreeed!! Beats mplayer hands down(but I give mplayer big credits for the w32codecs)
But really the restricted-extras installs the gstreamer plugin set which supports divx, and ffmpeg for audio. At the same time I'm sure vlc has divx support built in... maybe launch vlc from a terminal and check the output for an error.

yeah you can use vlc to also stream from http-video/audiostreams mms-video/audiostreams etc. But it isn't made to actually stream off of sites that easily. Often involves fetching the direct link to the content manually, or with some tool. Much more difficult than just using an embedded player.
vlc has most codecs with it, and if not the restricted-extras package fetches enough to work with nearly any format. The sad thing just is that there is no proper divx embedded player plugin for firefox

Well it turns out that vlc is having a real problem with internet streams, divx or HD content... so bad is the problem I had to turn to other player. Thats when I found exactly what you are looking for, gxine! It shows you where in the stream you are, allows you Fast forward and other things too but I have not yet had chance to play with this(still figuring out how to alter buffers(so far I changed user level to "master of the know universe" clicked the engine tab and upped the audio buff to 460, video buffs too 200 and frame buff to 30, which gives me only about 12secs of vid

) my connection gets flaky but yours might work with default)
Anyways there you go, gxine, very nice so far.

Thanks a ton crypto, that's the first player that actually has worked for me! Doesn't embed into firefox properly for me, but I can just use the download link and stream the video! It's so much better watching movies in the divx format, they are so much clearer! I do have one problem that is kind of odd! When I stream a movie, my screen flickers every 5 seconds or so, I don't know what could be causing this problem?!
