Brilliant doco Mark, love the part where he gets "deported" from the Vatican State for barely even asking questions.... classic.

I'm usually one to leave most religious topics alone because I'm aware of how important it is to most people. And more often than not trying to argue a point with one of the faithful is like talking to a coffee-table. Sometimes this isn't the case, as when I have had conversations with Buddhists and Hindus where the dialog was more give and take and was very enlightening. But now I'm straying from my original point.

I was raised in a very devout catholic family so I'm quite familiar with the religion and it's dealings in general and I always argue with my parents on the issues of money and property. And the lack of transparency or accountability. The catholic church is the richest and largest non-productive entity in the world. They pay no taxes on anything yet their income is in the billions. Very little of this money ends up doing any good work like provided homeless shelters, community projects and the like. Instead it's horded by the church leaders and used to buy trinkets and support their extremely lavish lifestyles. It's a sickening and sad state; one the main reasons I left the church. I'm not an atheist by any means; I consider myself more agnostic than anything. I just prefer to stay neutral on most of these things but the catholic church really makes my blood boil.

On topic great Doc. Thanks for the submission!

A great example of lots of money going on nothing is Mother Teresa. See this doc from C. Hitchens for more info.

It's ironic that one of the reasonw why pagans were attracted to the new religion of Christianity is due to the humanitarianism (for the time period).

The pagan religions of the past were not about helping your fellow man, nor about feeding the poor or providing shelter for the homeless. Instead, they were all about serving the god(s).

So we have come full circle with the Church acting more an more like the pagan religious institutions of the past. Interesting.

I'm completely aware of how evil she was. But bring up anything about this in my parents household get prepared to be shouted down immediately.

I've never seen the doc but I'll go ahead and give it a watch. Thanks!

Through only two degrees of Kevin Bacon I knew Mother Teresa. Her selflessness outweighs anything that you or I can ever hope to achieve. One of the most important questions we can ever ask our self is what are we doing for others? Mother Teresa constantly asked herself that question. Religion isn't needed to see the good that Mother Teresa did but her premise was that of a love that is a conflict for those who want nothing to do with it.

Sorry, but I have to call bullshit on that. Mother Teresa ran a cult of suffering (homes for the poor/sick) along with dealing with extremely shady people like brutal third world dictaors and drug dealers. She flew on a private jet and was cared for by dozens of servents, that's hardly selfless.

Being devout doesn't cover any of that up, not by a long shot.
