Hi guys, I just spent an hour browsing through the help forum on QSS trying to find an answer, but I can't seem to find anything so I'm hoping someone can help me out....

I found out about DownloadHelper (the Firefox add-on), but I'm not sure I'm doing everything correctly, since after downloading a video and converting it, I'm getting a video with only sound and no picture. I'm taking these steps to download and convert videos (for an example I'm using the movie The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which is one of the things I'm having trouble downloading and converting):

1) I click on part 1 and click the "play" button for the movie
2) The DH icon starts spinning, so I click on it and select "download" for the thing called jria9cfvvuxgp.flv
3) It asks me where I want to save it, and what I want to call it. By default, the file is simply called jria9cfvvuxgp, so I instead type in and call it jria9cfvvuxgp.flv. The only type I can save it as is
"all files," no flv type option is given, so I save it as an "all files" type.
4) I let jria9cfvvuxgp.flv download, and then I see it in my dwhelper folder as jria9cfvvuxgp.flv
5) I go back to Firefox, right click on the DH icon, and select Convert Videos
6) I choose jria9cfvvuxgp.flv, and click "AVI (mpeg4 + mp3)" as my output file, which I believe should give me a video (I always try converting everything to AVI, because I use my DivX player to
view everything, and I believe that runs AVI files)
7) After letting that convert, I see something called jria9cfvvuxgp.avi with a run-time length of an hour or so, which looks correct to me
8) I open the video in DivX, but it tells me that there is no video file attached. The same thing happens with every other player I try - sound's there, but no video

I tried Googling this problem, looking through the help forums on the actual DownloadHelper site, but I can't seem to find any solution. I'm probably doing some really stupid mistake, but I would really, REALLY appreciate any help anybody can give me. This is driving me insane!! Thanks again biggrin.gif

To download the file using Downloadhelper, your steps 1 and 2 are good:
1) I click on part 1 and click the "play" button for the movie
2) The DH icon starts spinning, so I click on it and select "download" for the thing called jria9cfvvuxgp.flv

For step 3, simply save the file to a location of your choice. Do not rename the file in any way. You can always change the name later. Make a note of were the file is being saved.
Download and install VLC Media Player to play the file. It's free and works very well.
If for some reason, you can't play the file because it doesn't have a file extension, add .flv to the file name. Try playing it again. It should work.

If you want to covert the file to some other format, you can use SUPER.
It can convert just about any format you want, and is also free.

On a side note, you can stream a video through a media player like VLC and watch it while it downloads. Take a look at Post #10 for instructions.

I tested the link you provided. It works fine - video and audio.

Turn the converter off. If you download a flv file, converting to an avi format is not going to make it any better. If you have to convert find a different converter. I use http://www.nchsoftware.com/prism/index.html , works great for me. If you download the vcl player don't make it your main player.

Thanks so much both of you - I downloaded the VLC player, and now everything works great! Thanks again!! smile.gif
