The Colony (2009-?)

What would you do in the wake of a global catastrophe? How would you find the very basics of survival: food, water and shelter? The Colony is a controlled experiment that attempts to determine exactly what it would take to survive and rebuild a functioning new society when the world we’ve grown accustomed to has been destroyed.

In The Colony, a group of 10 volunteers whose backgrounds and expertise represent a cross-section of modern society, are isolated for two months in an urban environment in downtown Los Angeles and tasked with creating a livable society. With no electricity, no running water and no communication with the outside world, all they have to work with are their skills and whatever tools and supplies they scavenge from their surroundings.




Arrival and Survival
Ten volunteers enter an experimental post-catastrophe world to see if they can survive and rebuild after a global disaster. Cordoned off in a downtown Los Angeles warehouse, they must secure shelter, filter water, and defend their new home from thieves.

Just finished watching and would hightly recommend!! Great premise and is not your usual dumbed down repetitive style aimed at the semi-intelligent. Good for a few laffs as well!! Looking forwards to the next ep!!

i love the building up like a lil town aspect... i also love games like garrysmod... and this is like, omg, want! gonna make traps at that side where everybody keeps showing up at....

As interesting as this show is the Fakeness of it gets to me. First the contestants treat everything as if they were in a real disaster which i think is a Faking for the cameras because its obvious that if your in a game show you can not be harmed by the makers. So protecting themselves when they go out for food its rather useless because no one can hurt them....

Second if they have no power how are the Cameras being powered.. there has to be a source of electricity but for tv purposes its being ignoored.. Either that or they have people coming over and givving them bateries which again is being ignoored for tv purposes. I think alot of details like that mean that the contestants never really get too deep into the theme of this being a disaster (i mean with all the Cameramans and the wires and what not you cant exectly get the feeling that your in an acctually disaster) meaning all the confessionals are faked.

The thing I like is the true/tried techniques and usefullness of some of their solutions (the woodgas thing and battery bank recharging was cool). I prefer it over what one can learn from mythbusters for instance.
All in all it's ok so far I just hope they'll be doing more technical/survival stuff like the woodgas, fishing technique(s) or hygene/disease/infection and food/diet stuff.

Ya, the show is quite fake, but there are a few things to learn from it, chemistry - wood gas, electrical - battery bank, and just plain old survival - the rain water roof pipe! Overall, i think it is a decent show, but just not great.

damn that new wisevid ad that makes you click okay to get rid of it..... even when the ads specifically say click okay to get rid of it.... i still don't like that sneaky tactic...... and I've always loved wisevid (good speed, good quality, and one of the few sites that actually broadcast widescreen on the crap square monitor I'm forced to use over the summer) I might have to find a new favorite site.... I hate those fuckass sneaky ads!

the first 8 minutes of this episode have already made me angry... I can't believe that dumb shit can't do simple 90 degree corner cuts with a manual saw, would have taken him only a few minutes more, plus he could nail it all to finish! the only power he would need is if he planned to use screws, which in a situation like this is not critical.... save the power for some damn real shit.... what a dumb ass!

I did lol at that part belonii, they've proven to be dumb asses so far,,,, i do like that one guy for his survival opinions, the contractor guy that is illiterate, probably my favorite so far, also the ex con, and the funny weakling old comp eng guy!

funny as f@~k the old guy with the grey haired pony tail, to a 260lb man-mountain"i could put you down with my thumb" l.m.a.o , its turning into poor version o the stanford experiment . also how much off screen coaching are they getting, theres no way that they think of all those inventions on there own. they cant all be that much of a bunch of geniuses, still a funny show tho.

I'm with you clarky121, no way do some of these people know these things. I am (from my name, Search And Rescue) trained in many things, as well as medicine, microbiology, scuba instructor, and build my own computers. I love designing things and trying to make things easier in my own life and when I am out in the elements. The contestants must have had a binder provided to them beforehand with survival methods and "how to" book. I know charcoal is an adsorbant from being a paramedic (we give activated charcoal in some overdoses), but I would never know to make a sand/charcoal filtration system like they did. (I was also in the Navy, where we had water purification systems)

Same with the "uneducated labor guy", are you really going to tell me that he has that much knowledge about solar panels and their output?? No way.

I think they had some tasks set out for them in pre-production and many "how to" manuals to look through or read. I like the experiment, but some of the suggestions just don't match up with their backgrounds. i.e., to purify the water I would boil it, catch the steam and let it collect for fresh water...just like we did on the ship. Simple distillation.

Thanks for all the episode links! I am totally hooked on this show even with the production influences I see. (If you are a producer reading this, call me I would love to do this type of show) I've always been told to go on survivor, I would be like Harrison Ford in Mosquito Coast though and have condos with A/C built within two weeks, lol.
