Whats the make and model? + do you know how old it is?
SEB
You might want to get a firmware update for it. For us to point you in that direction we'll need the info chaingang asked about.

HI,

sony dvd RW DW-Q12A IS THE NAME I BOUGHT IT 2006 ITS WARRANTY IS GONE NOW

use the f/w update as a last resort,if done incorrectly will render the hardware permanently useless.Have you done any simple maintenance like removing it from the box & blowing-out the accumulated dust (be careful w/the laser) and cleaning the disc? sometimes helps.

My DVD-RW drive is a Sony DW-Q28A, and it's notoriously 'picky' about what brand of media it uses. If cheap media is used it develops write errors on the disc and sometimes won't read them when they're inserted later. Reflashing the firmware several times improved the situation a little, but not entirely.

My previous drive, also a Sony, had the same problem... possibly a coincidence but my solution has been to try various brands of media and then re-order the ones which gave the best results. If you end up doing this, the freeware program DVD Identifier may be helpful for you; it reads the 'Unique Disc Identifier' of the inserted media, which you can then Google to find out if its quality/reliability.

Hope some of that's helpful. smile.gif

Doesn't even show up in a search on the sony site... you sure that's the right model number?

Hi,

Yeah it is the right model number i saw it in my receipt from the shop from where it was brought and in my pc hardware confugiration too

I suspect it is a cheap knock off as the dvd writer doesn't have the name sony written on it it was a loose piece without box i think it is an its an oem version

so no details can be found on the site
V1p3r
if you install the free version of Everest, it will tell you what writer you have, and probobly link you to where to get drivers and other support for it.
hmadeira
yeah, if you cant find it on sony site its an oem lot of them floating around..remove it from yr box, there should be an oem label on it & google that, gd luck

could you explain that again please Im not following what your saying too clearly
V1p3r
are you burning the movies as files, or as an actual movie DVD?
V1p3r
and if its having issues opening or responding too slow to media, then you might want to look at replacing it.

The fact that i am saying is when i burn video files that i downloaded form internet in any format be it FLV FORMAT OR IN MPEG FORMAT DURING WRITING THE DVD SHOWS WRITING IS SUCCESSFUL BUT WHEN I START TO PLAY THOSE FILES SOME FILES PLAY WELL BUT SOME FILES BE IT OF ANY FORMAT PLAYS ONLY HALF AND THEN THE DVD HANGS AND VLC SHOWS IT CANT READ THE FILES THATS THE PROBLEM THE ALL FILES ARE NOT WRITTEN PROPERLY AND A FEW DVDS AFTER WRITING DIDNT EVEN PLAY AT ALL IT JUST KEEPS ON READING THE DVD AND THE PC GETS HANGED AND I HAVE WASTED A LOT OF BLANK DVDS ON IT BECAUSE A WHOLS MOVIE IS NEVER WRITTEN PROPERLY AND SOME FILES OF THE MOVIE PLAY ONLY HALF AND GETS HANED IN THE MIDDLE

AND THERE IS ALSO ISSUE WITH OPENING THE TRAY THE TRAY ONLY OPENS WHEN THERE IS A DVD INSIDE WHEN THERE ISNT ANY DVD INSIDE IT TAKES A LOT OF EFFORT TO OPEN THE TRAY

And I WRITE EACH DVD IN DATA DVD FORMAT AND NOT IN DVD VIDEO FORMAT AND I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR LAST 3 YEARS WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL

When I read this I hear yelling in my head.. Caps=yelling.

I have problems similar to that when I am running other things on my computer and my cpu useage is high. I stopped running so many things on compter and I was recommended to lower my write speed. I now burn about 4x just to play it safe and I can still do things on my computer.

I heard of some software you can run your player through to diagnose a problem but I cant remember the name .. or anything else. Maybe someone on the site knows.
V1p3r
few questions then.... and watch the caps please, thats on the same level as yelling, and yelling at ppl trying to help you is just rude, just so you know.

1) What burning software do you use?

2) Is your antivirus or antispyware on when you burn? Any other software? Surfing the net?

3) What speed are you burning at?

4) does your dvd drive have issues with retail movie or data DVDs? (slow read times, acting oddly?)

5) were there any major changes to your system around the time this started happening? (software installed/uninstalled, hardware changes of any kind, OS updates?)

these questions will help narrow down if its a software issue, or a hardware issue. And only answer the questions please, you have already typed the same thing at least 3-4 times, and you've given us no new info.

Sorry for the same information

I use nero 7

Yes anti virus is on .No i do not surf the net

Dvd writing speed is 4X OR 8X

No problem it was working fine writing any dvds until a month ago

Yeah i formatted the system twice My pc has become slow don t know how

Once my my display was gone so took it a engineer he just rubbed the ram with a rubber and it started he told due to rain or moisture had accumulated on my ram

Other than that not much changes

Have you tested to see if it always happens with the same files? It might just be errors in the movie files themselves. You could run the movie through drdivx before burning.

At last brought a new DVD writer from LG it has a name pasted on it hope it worls well I already burned a dvd on it and it burned well

glad you got it sorted... sometimes parts just break down. My old laptop, the DVD writer just suddenly went all crazy on me, as a matter of fact, it would only read one disc, and that was a retail game disc.... every other disc I put in would just get no results as far as a response. Considering the laptop is 6 years old (pushing 7) I just assumed the drive was bad and replaced it with the appropriate gateway replacement part.

some people say after awhile your tray gets magnatized and has trouble opening.....I had this problem and solved it by using that clear disk that they give you when you buy a new bundle of disks, I just leave that in the tray... as far as your burning problems I use dvd flick and have never had a problem with it even after hundreds and hundreds of burn jobs...you can burn up to 4.5 hours on dvd flick to 1 disk

hope this helps

That's a pretty good idea. Thanks for that info.

As far as cyclic redundancy.... that error usually occurs when the disc is burned to fast causing the files on the disc to be corrupted, or.... the laser is going out in your burner. Old age and overuse can be the culprit. Might just be time to suck it up and get a new burner.
