Seppuku (1962) Seppuku aka Harakiri is rated as one of the best movies ever made. Seppuku is one of my favourite movies, it goes beyond just being a Samurai movie.
Come Drink With Me (1966) King hu's Come Drink With Me is highly rated as one of the pioneering modern Wushu classics.
The One-Armed Swordsman (1967) This movie broke box office records across Asia, and is rated as a classic in the new Wushu genre.
Fist Of Fury aka The Chinese Connection (1972) In my opinon Bruce Lee's greatest film. The dojo scene is one of the greatest fight scenes in martial arts cinema.
The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin (1978) This movie is a kung fu masterpiece. Rated as the number one Shaolin movie, and one of the greatest kung fu/martial arts movies in history.
The Street Fighter (1974) This movie starred the japanese Bruce Lee (sonny chiba) The Street Fighter is a cult classic.
A Better Tomorrow (1986) John Woo's first action movie, Before ABT Woo had only made a few kung fu movies and some comedies. After making ABT Woo said this was the direction he wanted his film making to go. ABT is rated as a pioneer in the triad gangster film genre, a true classic.
Ip Man (2008) Ip Man is a modern martial arts classic, easily my favourite martial arts movie to come out in a long time.

I only saw Seppuku for the first time a couple of years ago, I'd never heard of it before then. If you have any trouble finding it just let me know, I'll upload it for you.
You picked out some good movies, I'd put Crouching Tiger up there as a classic kung fu movie that crossed over to a western audience. Kung Fu Hustle has to be one of the best modern asian comedies, I think it's Stephen Chows best. And seven Samurai ofcourse is truly a cinematic masterpiece.
I could've made my list much longer, and I've probably left out some important films, I just picked the ones that popped into my mind. I will add
Snake In The Eagles Shadow (1978) to the list. Snake In The Eagles Shadow sparked off the whole Kung Fu comedy genre, and made Jackie Chan into a superstar, it's also a personal favourite of mine, and a movie I first saw when I was a kid. Starring the legend Simon Yuen (Yuen Siu Tien) father of Yuen Woo Ping, and the master kicker Hwang Jang Lee. I've probably seen this film more than any other.

ill definately have to check out Snake In The Eagles Shadow, and IPman as well. Although, is it me, or is Asian cinema under appreciated in America? I feel like very few films make it to the majority of audiences and, everyone here would probably enjoy a good flick, a different perspective on film making every once in a while.
I'm going to say pretty much any Kurosawa film should be on everybodys list of movies to see

I downloaded the copy of Seppuku from veoh and found some subtitles that work with the video. You just have to download the video and put the video and the subtitles in the same folder.

I doubt i could single out one that's the best one ive ever watched, but here's one that stuck in my mind recently after a friend recommended it :
Shinobi. Top notch flick worth a watch. I can't link it as most asian movies i watch, including this one, are on a site similar to this one but only caters to asian movies.

Some good movies listed here, i noticed a lot were action or martial arts so I thought i'd chuck in a few of my recommendations too.
In no particular order:
Raise the red Lantern
a visually stunning Chinese drama from the director (Zhang Yimou) that brought you more recent flicks like 'Hero' or 'house of flying daggers'
I'd reccomend all Wong Kar wai films but a good place to start would be his, loose trilogy, that includes;
'Days of being wild' (sometimes described as a chinese rebel without a cause) then 'in the mood for love' and finally '2046'.
i'd also recommend, 'Chungking Express' another Wong movie that is made up of 2 short stories in hong kong.
someone mentioned takeshi miike earlier. I like all his movies, but i love 'Gozu' an utterly bizarre Yakuza movie that has an almost David Lynch feel. check it!
i recently watched another of his films, 'Crows zero' which is about a boy entering the most violent school in japan and trying to kick the crap out of everyone there to be crowned the king. comic book action throughout. not the greatest film but pretty funny stuff.
My favorite samurai movies are the Akira Kurosawa classic 'Yojimbo' and a more down to earth realistic portrayal of samurai lifestyle, 'Twilight Samurai' . (i love this one, made me cry)
One more, 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence' prisoner of war drama starring David Bowie, Takeshi Kitano and Ryuichi Sakamoto. an Iconic soundtrack from Sakamoto on this one. highly reccomended.
might add more later but i just noticed my download of seppuku has finished! Thanks to whoever reccomended this one. looks really good!
peace

So I like certain martial arts movies. So far I've seen Ong Bak 1/2 and Ip Man (Wtf? Great ass movie).
Wondering if anyone knows martial arts movies that look more modern with great stories. Name recommendation would be great but an imdb link (qss link too if you got time) would be very helpful but I won't ask for too much.
Thanks to anyone that can help.
P.S. Anyone got good link for Tae Guk Gi. Found one but not divx uploaded and that's what I'm looking. Know not martial arts but got my attention.

watch hero, or the warriors (although they are chinese epics there is definately a lot of fighting in them. unless by modern you mean modern day then i would have to say. have you seen tony jaa's the protector?
imdb i am going to throw in random ones that people may object to but w/e.
bulletproof monk and equilibrium (although not asian actors the fight scenes are well choreographed like a martial arts film
also unleased-one of my favorite jet li flix, next to the one. also fist of legend
or you could just forget everything and watch street fighter (the game movie or the non game movie lol)
since i am tired i am not posting the links, sorry bout that, just copy and paste-it isnt hard...goodnight

BTW When I say modern I mean like modern made after '85+ perferably. Because usually pre '85 movies has that old movie look to it, usually grainy, or even black and white. Like Ip Man is set in past but has a real modern look to it because of the visiuals.

This is a great thread thanks I am a big fan of Asian movies.
Toshiro Mifune is my favorite Actor
Here are a few more of the movies made By Kurosawa starring Toshiro Mifune that no fan of Asian films should miss:
Throne of Blood- Basically a Samurai version of the Shakespeare play MacBeth
The Hidden Fortress- This is about a princess on the run being guarded by a warrior/Samurai and accompanied by two would be Samurai – This is the film that inspired Star Wars.
Yojimbo – This was remade later by Clint Eastwood called A Fistful of Dollars
Sanjiro – Same Character that Mifune plays in Yojimbo but a few years later, It’s actually a bit humorous as well as an excellent Samurai film.
Rashomon – This is the first film that got attention from the entire world for Kurosawa and Mifune
The above are all classics, two more I’ll add are later films made by Kurosawa that Mifune does not appear in
Kagemusha
And
Dreams
Enjoy

It was good. Maybe didnt get as rave reviews as IA, but IA2 was good. Its a prequel really, if memory servers (i only saw it once, whereas IA i have seen multiple times) its about how all the crazy gang/police relationship in the original gets set up the way it is. I believe Scorsese plans to also remake this sequel and have young look-a-like actors come back to place Nicholson and Sheens roles. Just like the director did in IA2. So it must have at least struck Scorsese as a worthy sequel story.
