I saw this movie a while back and thought it was a pretty good movie but not a great movie. But the one thing that kind of shocked me was seeing who wrote and directed this movie because I never really saw Joey Lauren Adams (Mallrats, Chasing Amy) as a writer/director. I mean, she's not even really that good of an actress, but she might have a future as a writer/director after seeing her first effort with this movie. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I agree Kinky. Not great, but a decent first effort from Joey Lauren Adams. I have to say I'm a tad disappointed that Ashley Judd isn't picking better material to act in -- she started out so promising with Ruby in Paradise and A Time To Kill, but lately her films seem to be very LifetimeTV-movie-of-the-week-ish. She still looks gorgeous though; a heckuva lot better than actresses nearly half her age like Lindsey Lohan.

A couple of other films Ashley Judd fans might want to check out are the indie drama The Locusts with sexy Vince Vaughn (pre-alcoholic bloat, LOL) and the weird and twisted The Passion of Darkly Noon where she and Viggo Mortensen had some smoking hot love scenes.

Yeah, for a while in the mid 90's and early 2000's, Ashley Judd's career looked like it was about to skyrocket to the level of Julia Roberts or Nicole Kidman. But she's been in some pretty cheesy movies lately and her career seems to have hit a brick wall, which is a shame because she is actually a pretty talented actress. And you hit the nail on the head with the Lifetime TV movie of the week comment. laugh.gif

And yes, she is still very gorgeous for someone entering her 40's.

Good comparison. And off topic a bit: I wonder if Julia Roberts is the last of a dying breed. I know some people can't stand her, but you've gotta admit (before she went into semi-retirement to raise her kids) she's a rarity among actresses in that she can open a movie all on her own and do comedy and drama equally well. There are plenty of actresses who are arguably better -- like Cate Blanchett and Marisa Tomei and Nicole Kidman -- but for some reason they don't have the charisma Julia has and it doesn't translate into ticket sales. I guess Hollywood is pinning their hopes on Reese Witherspoon (and perhaps later down the line Ellen Page).

I've always loved Julia Roberts because there is something about her that is so warm, welcoming and friendly, and she does have the talent to play a broad spectrum of characters. But as you said, there are better actresses out there but they don't attract audiences for some reason. I think with Kidman (one of the most overrated actresses ever) she comes off as very cold and distant, and not only that but she comes off as someone who is stuck-up, full of herself and looks down her nose at people, which isn't an endearing quality.

As for Reese Whiterspoon, I like her and think she has talent, but she has yet to really capture me with an impressive performance. Yes, she won an Oscar for Walk The Line but that doesn't mean she's a great actress. I mean, look at some recent winners of an Academy Award who have done nothing really good since they won: Cuba Gooding Jr., Mira Sorvino, Halle Berry, Roberto Benigni, Adrien Brody, Helen Hunt, etc.

I think Ellen Page may be the actress Hollywood can bet on because she's done some really solid work in her very brief career so far. I remember seeing her in Hard Candy and The Tracey Fragments and was quite impressed, and she was even good in smaller roles in Marion Bridge and Wilby Wonderful. The only thing she needs to avoid is getting typecast as the angst ridden teen. But from what I've seen of her abilities, I think she can manage to be very sucessful in mainstream movies and yet still have her foot in smaller indie flicks.
