Cult comedy Red Dwarf is returning to the small screen this Easter, 21 years since the science fiction series first blasted off.

For eight series, Dave Lister wanted to return to his home planet. Now, at last, he has - in Red Dwarf: Back to Earth.

Written and directed by Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor, the new show reunites Chris Barrie as Rimmer, Craig Charles as Lister, Danny John-Jules as Cat and Robert Llewellyn as Kryten.

The two-part series Red Dwarf: Back to Earth, will kick start a Red Dwarf Easter weekend from Good Friday.

This will be followed by Red Dwarf: Unplugged, a "no holds barred" episode with no sets, no effects - and no autocue.

The weekend will climax with Red Dwarf: the Making of Back to Earth, a behind-the-scenes special from the new production.

The offbeat series, set in space, has enjoyed phenomenal success since it first aired in 1988 on BBC2.

It brought in more than eight million viewers for series eight, sold 7.25 million DVD and videos worldwide, broadcast in some 25 territories worldwide and won International Emmy and British Comedy Awards.

That was cool, good to see the guys back together again but where's Holly? I missed his intro. emoticon-0124-worried.gif
belonii
depending on the timeline, holly might have burned out... seeing as the whole nanobots shipcrew regen didnt happen, i asume its RedDwarf, 9 years after defrosting lister, keeping its original premmise of him, the cat, rimmer to keep lister sane, kryte joined not long after that.... upto alternate universe kachanski seems to hve happened, everything, except the nanobots storyline...

BUT WHO CARES! I LOVED IT, AND I CANT WAIT FOR TONIGHT!

it was odd not having audiences reactions, and not having holly, even the "russian" chick is odd, but the chemistry is there... that squid bit got me all hyped up

kinda feeling that way too.it just seems like they have gone pretty half assed on these 3 episodes. It may just be me longing for the good ole days of the Dwarf, but I really think they could have done alot better than this.
richbeck3
Guys, its a classic. If you are not old enough to appreciate it, just dont watch it. It was an awsome tv series and it is continuing the same style as before (better than i expected). The humor is very English, the American version never made it past eppisode 1.

Thanks for the links!

I agree that it may not have exactly the same atmos as the other 8 Seasons and that is because of several reasons...

1. It's 9 Years Later
2. The Original Cast are Older (and starting to look it)
3. Season 9 was not recording Live (Hence no Laughter)
4. The Actors have been in other TV Programs that have diluted their Red Dwarf Characters (They have altered their Style)
5. There is only ONE Writer remember (maybe Bobby Llew helped)
6. They are on Earth which is difficult to adjust to
7. No Sign of Holly, which in my opinion would have made Season 9 brilliant
8. The Cast seem a lot more serious in attitude
9. Season 9 was commissioned and made by a TV Channel (Dave) that is not exactly loaded in terms of Money (The BBC were Richer)

So taking those reasons in to account I still believe that Red Dwarf is still Red Dwarf only it's grown up, and I still enjoy what I have seen so far!

121million
Is this the Red Dwarf Movie (Split into Parts) and NOT Season 9?

Not my Words, I have taken a comment from the Dave Web Site...

To people who say the episodes where crap and pointless, Doug Naylor didnt want to end the series with season 8 he wanted to make a movie and then a series then another movie but the money just wasnt there, he tryed to make the 3 part special into movie style, so you wouldnt have laughing in the movie so its not in this, fair enough the audience was a big part, but if you need an audience to know where to laugh and when to laugh maybe you just dont get the jokes, doug naylor didnt have a big budget for the 3 parter so using this story line cuts down the cost of it being on the streets and then entering coronation street, its a good use of money, i thought the first episode was abit slow but i think they did it well, well how do you bring back a big comedy show after all these years, you need to gradually bring it back into it, anyways i thought the special was great cant wait til tonight to see what happens, remember if your a red dwarf fan, stick befind it it needs our support and maybe they will make season 9 and 10, after all we all made red dwarf what it is today, if it wasnt for us it wouldnt be huge, Love the show, Doug Naylor keep up the good work and the rest of the team, and hopefully we will see you in another series, best of look with it all

So am I to assume that this so called Mini Series is actually the Red Dwarf Movie and NOT Season 9? Are we looking at the possibility of Seasons 9 and 10 afterall? I have spotted a few Clues in the Episodes, Season 9 and 10 is actually mentioned in them!

I think thats why I find it a bit sad, I grown as well
nicknick
it feels really depressing, like the characters have been in the same situation for nine years and they just dont find it funny anymore.
Without the laugher the puns make everything feel dark.

Does it even comment about the finale episode of season 8 with the toaster? Or what happened to chakansky from the alternate dimension? Im a continuity nut and for me it was looking like in the first few minutes they just ignored the previous season and started over.

Well according to the Dave Web Site, people are saying the Plot of Back To Earth was basically stolen from League Of Gentlemen which was a very popular TV Series which was killed because of the same Plot (they used in the L.O.G Movie) they have now used in Red Dwarf, seems to me that in all honesty either they just haven't got enough imagination on how to get Lister back home, or they just don't care and have just ignored Season 8 and just wrote anything that came to mind, it really is a shame if they kill it off now... like this... in this way, a new FULL Season after this wouldn't be too much to ask would it?

Sorry, just had to post this, it's from Yahoo Questions, the Question was...

Does anyone think that Red Dwarf series 9 and 10 will be produced?

And this is part of an answer by 'Arnold Judas Rimmer' noless

Let's face it, with people disgustingly turning their backs on Red Dwarf just because they can't appreciate how damn hard this was to make. And with Doug (and the cast for that matter) getting too old for this. And with Dave being the completely wrong channel for this - but unfortunately the last source of funding for Red Dwarf. Red Dwarf is over. I just hope people learn some damn respect and appreciate Back to Earth as a good attempt, a damn fine attempt, to bring Red Dwarf back for one last hazah. If people could at least some respect then it will not have been in vein.

And I totally agree 100%, Rock'N Smegging Roll!!!

I love red dwarf and i say 'Two fingers up' to all those who have slated the Back To Earth episodes.

I must admit i was worried that it would not have worked, but i still sat here killing my self laughing through out and the ending is pure Red Dwarf!

Love it!

If you've watched alot of dwarf you should know not to expect continuity. the past was constantly altered through out the show's original series' why should we expect it to stop now.

Warning! Spoiler: The End of Season 9 looks pretty much left open, so there could be another Season!

Enjoy!

As an avid fan of the whole series of Red Dwarf, i thought the new season was OK, missed the audience laughter and Holy tho.
Just wish the BBC would put some weight behind making a new series, it would be far better than leaving it to a third rate channel such as Dave. (We're talking budget)
Anyway, it was nice to see the Boy's on the Dwarf again, even with such a flimsey script.
Let's hope there while be more in the not to distant future.

No matter how you look at it, how it's written or how it's made, or even how much Money is thrown at it...

For those Red Dwarf Fans that miss it, I have thought about you and I have decided to give you a very special Gift, the Gift of Laughter...

http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/835...ound-effect-wav

Play this sound every time you find something funny in Back To Earth.

Enjoy LOL.

...Edit I just tried it and it makes the show a lot more enjoyable, I have found that it works fantastic with Kats and Rimmers Lines.

If you have the Shows Downloaded, just put your Video Player in 'Always on top mode' and have the Web Site (as above) behind it so you can click the sound effect play button.

It would be cool if somebody could actually dub Laughter onto the Videos and re-upload them, obviously making sure it's in the right places and ofcourse using various Laughter samples of different length, would like to see if somebody can do that, anyway just a mad idea lol

homelessbrian
I just started watching the new ones. I am already upset with the lack of laugh track. :-/ I hope these turn out well.
richbeck3
It has been left very open ended, and possibly annother season could be made from this. BUT I will not hold my breath, i have no idea how good the ratings for the show were.
Geitian
lol audience laughter. Good one 121!

The beginning was rocky like they were trying too hard to be what they were, but as the episodes progressed it got tons better. I think it was getting used to not having the laughter there that took a while as well as the humor being a little different than most of us remember. But actually I quite liked the direction, and the ending felt sort of bittersweet. This was incredible!

I am working on a 'Canned' Version now, nearly done, should be a more memorable experience lol.

richbeck3
Dunno what to make of the canned version, i watched first 1/2 of ep 1 and it could have been done better (yeah, i know you did not want to waste a lot of time on it), however I am not sure if the effect adds to the video or not. I dont think it makes it worse, just not sure if it is an improvement.
yoobastid
i'm sorry i know you tried but the canned laughter is horrible.
121million
richbeck3: It was just an experiment to see how it would have been if the makers would have put Canned Laughter in, I think that it helps a little, but that's just my opinion.

yoobastid: Perhaps the actual sound Samples used are not 100% correct, but it's just an experiment anyway, Part 2 and 3 (currently doing) seem to work better.

If anybody could attempt it then please do so, it would be good to see if we could find the definitive Canned version lol.

How I did it: I used Royalty Free Audio Clips (Searched Google) and then just used Camtasia Studio to Dub them in.

I don't know how much you know about audio balancing, but you might want to try adjusting the volumes of the dialogue and laugh tracks so the chuckles aren't overriding the characters' lines.

I think the more you watch all 3 parts, the more it seems to be Classic Red Dwarf, I have probably watched them about 7 times now lol.

I have just finished doing the Canned version of Part 3, this time around I used actual sound Samples from previous Red Dwarf Seasons Shows and equalized the volume of them so as not to drown the Crews Lines too much, it's pretty difficult to get it 100% right, but I think this final attempt is much better than the first 2, I will upload it shortly and the link will be a couple of post before this one, hope you like it because I aint gonna be doing anymore to it lol.
