1970. This exceptional documentary, created by the Maysles brothers, delivers with crystal clarity the stark drama of the ill-fated Rolling Stones free concert at Altamont Speedway on 6 December 1969 - a date that has come to symbolize the death of an era, one that had just barely come into being. A scant four months earlier, Woodstock was pronounced successful, and a new era of peace and love was said to have been born. That the announcement of such birthing was premature - and quite possibly a mass hallucination - was about to be made violently clear on a desolate racetrack six miles outside of San Fransisco. And, luckily for us, the Maysles captured all of it on film. Watch Gimme Shelter
