Ours is said to be a Godless age, yet billions remain faithful to religions thousands of years old. This provocative eight-part series explores the history and global impact of the world's biggest religion through the personal views of leading British figures.

Over the course of the series, eight high-profile personalities - including Colin Blakemore, Michael Portillo, Rageh Omaar, Kwame Kwei-Armah and Cherie Blair - look at the origins and history of the Christian faith.

In each film the presenter addresses a subject that means something particular to them. In doing so, they bring their own perspectives to a challenging and comprehensive debate that explores Christianity's role in shaping the modern world.

Jesus the Jew

Leading British writer Howard Jacobson, a Jew himself, examines the origins and consequences of Christian belief. He argues that although Christianity originated in devout Judaism, for Jews it has been, for the most part, a calamity.

Jacobson talks to Christian and Jewish scholars. He visits Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Galilee and Rome to find out more about Jesus the Jew, and discovers how key Christian beliefs - including the notion of a Messiah and baptism - have roots in Judaism.

Furthermore, he asserts that Jesus didn't intend to start a new religion, and that for Jesus's family the new movement remained within Judaism: for them he was a charismatic Rabbi.

Great doc. Great timing as well, since the Christian dependency on Judaism is being brought up in other parts of the forum.

It reads to me a little like this...

- The Hebrews make up a God based on earlier myths and their own ideologies. People who worship this Jewish God are the Jews. Jesus is Jewish and worships the Jewish God.

- The Catholics then worship Jesus as a human form of the Jewish God. They then go on to compile, revise, cryptify and own the bible for the next 1600 years while wiping out all traces of earlier form of Christ worship. In order to appease the Jewish God, a Catholic must worship the human form of the Jewish God, while the Jews require no intermediary.

- The Christians then worship Jesus and the Jewish God (same thing, both Jewish) as described in the Catholic bible, while implementing certain Catholic rituals.

That to me is a brief time line of what happened. Please correct me if I am wrong. To me, it seems that there is actually no such thing as Christianity... only wannabe Catholicism.... which is actually wannabe Judaism... which is largely borrowed from earlier Sumerian mythology, etc....

I am curious how a religious person feels that they even qualify themselves as a believer in a God that is so far remote from their own religion? If a person needs a clear indication that religion evolves, just like every single other facet of human society, then you need look no further than Christianity.

inane controversy? Fuck man, your apathy is a gift. I see religion poisoning the minds of children and killing thousands on a daily basis and find it much harder to ignore than you. Women are circumcised while men martyr themselves by exploding in packed marketplaces... all in the name of this "inane controversy". I wonder how much of an asshole one has to be to actually ignore such atrocity?

I feel exactly like ultraforge. If no one took interest in the actual validity of the bible, and or Christianity, we would still be dominated by theocracy. From the Vatican strong arming third world African countries to skip condom use resulting in a horrific H.I.V. positive %, to retards trying to undermine America's public school sciences, to con-men disguising as radio or T.V. evangelists fleecing the more gullible or desperate of our population, the religious zealots are holding back mankind in many ways. I find the mental delusion the most interesting part. However, I no longer debate or even try to rationalize with fundy's anymore. The level of denial makes it nearly impossible to even have a sensible conversation with them. As soon as you tell a Christian their book is just a dumbed down plagiarized version of old Babylonian,Sumerian,and Canaanite beliefs; they look at you like you just ran over their new puppy. They have no intention on researching facts for themselves, I think they are afraid of what they will find. So instead they continue to cling to their slowly dying religion.
