Oz and James's Big Wine Adventure

Season one: Wine trekking

Top Gear's James May knew nothing about wine but that's all changed since wine expert Oz Clarke invited him on a month-long trip to France to learn all about it.

Episode one

James May arrived in Bordeaux with Oz Clarke for an introduction to the art of wine tasting at the magnificent, 150-year-old Château Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse-de-Lalande of Grand Dame Madame May-Elaine de Lencquesaing. After a brief break in the lessons at an unusual grape-related spa, Oz put James's new-found tasting skills to the test at the Château Pichon-Baron, in front of one of the wine industry’s biggest players, Englishman Christian Seely.

Episode two

Provence provides an opportunity to learn to match wine with various foods. Jean-Claude Mas, a young winemaker who uses New World techniques to improve the wine, coupled the local speciality, oysters, with his Arrogant Frog Sauvignon Blanc

Episode three

The Rhône Valley provided ample opportunity to learn about lots of different grape varieties. However, the world-renowned winemaker Michel Chapoutier provides an obvious distraction for James with his classic car collection.

Episode four

The duo headed to Alsace and Burgundy for a lesson on barrel making, and ‘terroir’ - a catch-all way of describing the many factors that can influence the quality of a vineyard. Oz then took a sceptical James to meet one of Burgundy’s most celebrated winemakers, Thierry Beaumont, to sample Burgundies from Thierry’s three separate terroirs.

Episode five

On arriving in the north-eastern corner of France, in Champagne, James and Oz were shown how to blend wines in the headquarters of the House of Krug, by Rémi Krug himself. Next, they’re off to meet an independent champagne producer, the Compte Audoin de Dampierre. And of course James is more interested in looking at the Count’s vintage Aston Martin than tasting the vintage champagne!

Season two: California dreaming

Wine expert Oz Clarke and Top Gear's James May went to California to seek out the best and worst of the New World.

Episode one

The odd couple were reunited on Muscle Beach where Oz won the World Wine Tasting Championships in the 1980s. His bubble is soon burst when James reveals his vehicle of choice for their road trip, a 42ft monster motorhome which they will share for four hot, cramped and sweaty weeks.

Episode three

The dynamic duo headed to the dusty plains and opulent coastline of Monterey County, stopping in Delicato - the world's biggest vineyard - which is so vast that there are different climates from one end to the other. It even has a runway, which is often used as a racetrack. From here the boys went to Carmel, one of California's richest towns.

Episode four

Oz and James met some established winemakers in Santa Cruz to talk about varietals. Bonny Doon wines were a big hit with the boys, made by eccentric winemaker Randall Grahm. He blends Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah along with less well known grapes like Cinsault.

Episode five

Oz and James hit the San Francisco Bay Area on a mission to delve deeper into the history of California wine. They investigated Prohibition and sought out old vineyards that are more than 100 years old. At Cline Vineyards in Oakley they met Fred Cline, an old-school winemaker keen to carry on the heritage of old vines while resisting selling out to the urban sprawl of San Francisco.

Episode six

Oz and James left San Francisco and headed for Carneros on the shores of San Pablo Bay to find out why some of the cool parts of California are perfect for sparkling wines. They met Eileen Crane from Domaine Carneros (owned by Champagne Taittinger), a winemaker who believes she was born to make bubbles.

Episode seven

Oz and James continued their tour of California and met some of the most powerful and eccentric winemakers in the Golden State. They headed for Sonoma, an established wine region now competing with the best that the more famous Napa Valley has to offer.

Watch

Episode eight

In the final leg of their New World adventure Oz and James took on the opulence of Napa Valley, California's biggest tourist attraction after Disneyland. James was shocked by the wealth and over-the-top wineries that seduce tourists into buying wine.
