QUOTE
A supermassive black hole is a black hole with a mass in the range of hundreds of thousands to tens of billions of solar masses. It is currently thought that most, if not all galaxies, including the Milky Way, contain a supermassive black hole at their galactic center.

The astronnomer that was lookinbg at the center of the milky way kept saying " At the moment" when referring the the black hole feeding, but the black hole is like 2000 light years a way so no not at the moment, more like " in 6 AD/ CE the SMBH was feeding" but htats not as fantastic. on the same note if the sun ever just winked out, we wouldnt get any warning and we would in fact find out late. it takes 8 minutes for light to reach earth from the sun. AND ANOTHER THING sorry I am ranting smile.gif the astronomers kept referring ot other "solar" systems, but we are the only solar system. Sol is our star. Star system. The proxima centauri system, not proxima centauri's solar system.

I haven't seen this one yet, but little "errors" like that can piss me off 2 wink.gif

Welcome to the forums dirtyjon and keep on ranting !

ok so basically your a hater of others who have an opportunity to speak, because your almighty opinion is stuffled in silence... i must say that you interpreted the astronomers words from a perspective of pessimism. "Right now", obviously means the moment in which we can see, being most recently, perhaps a better choice of words would have sufficed for your glorious brain, but im sure the rest of us idiots can easily figure that out... as far as the rest of it, solar system, schmolar system your lack of vision is overwhelming. Perhaps there is another sun somewhere beyond our measly vision; and perhaps you only know as much as they allow you to know.. hence this "Astronomer" which i take it you are not one, perhaps has a bit more information than your google search can provide. Study harder and buy a bigger telescope, then you too can have a chance to be critiqued by some internet nobody, who thinks he knows it all.

dirtyjon makes some good points but has made one mistake.

Solar refers to Sun or Star.

Basically a solar system is a group of planets that have at least one star and there are indeed many out there, the term does not just refer to our solor system in this very very small part of the galaxy.

Interesting. Lovely to see how theories materialize into reasonable pseudo-certainties.

Ooh my bandwith is toiling under all that documentary goodness.

Was that the music from The Predator? Awesome

im not pessimistic i am just acutely aware of the sensationalism in the media. and the dumbing down of content to be easily digested by the lowest common denominator. Thanks for flaming me yermom. its good to see observations of a decent documentary that had a few flaws be treated with such... "pessimism". And there is no doubt in my mind that there are other star systems with planets and life and everything but the sun / sol is our star. And not all of us flame or rant or whatever only after referencing google. some of us use degrees and education and common sense wink.gif I wasnt bashing this documentary , quite the contrary, but i was noting how imprecise the language used in many documentaries are, and that vernacular terms are not always a good thing. I agree that they are used and that they are accurate. I refer to other solar systems when talking sometimes, but scientists know better. anyways Like i said i enjoyed the documentary very much just a few things that stuck out. Sometimes i wish people could hear me speak what i type they probably wouldnt get quite so incensed. cheers - Jon

I belive this is the Terran system.

NO WAY I CHECKED IT THIS TIME! I SWEAR TO GOD I DID.

Good taste. New links are always welcome. Post them in the same thread though... it bumps it to the top, and gives alternative options.
