This shouldn't be much of a surprise, but don't expect to see another direct sequel in the X-MEN franchise. It seems the LAST STAND really was.

Instead, Fox is officially continuing the origin route (following their WOLVERINE and theoretical MAGNETO projects) with a look at the early days of the mutant students in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. The script will come from Josh Schwartz ("THE O.C.", "CHUCK", "GOSSIP GIRL"), who actually let the news slip to our own Ben Barna during an interview back in May (it has since disappeared from the internets, damn lawyers).

Schwartz, who will apparently "inject a next-gen sensibility" into the series, reportedly declined a directing opportunity, so the chair is still open. No story details are being revealed, but it's safe to assume it will involve younger versions of familiar characters at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, along with some brand new freaks.

Keep in mind that although Marvel Studios is making headway on their own, they no longer control the movie rights to some of their A-list superhero roster and their peripherals (X-MEN, SPIDER-MAN, FANTASTIC FOUR), which they relinquished during a 90s bankruptcy "fire sale". So expect to see a few more Fox X-spinoffs as long as comic book flicks generate some bucks...

This might turn out to be something really awesome, then again, it may not. If it's anything like the previous X films, I'm sure I'll love it!!

meh, i wasnt a big fan of any of the xmen movies, but a reboot/prequal with a spanking new director could make it awesome, i loved all recent marvel movies, except for spidey, wish they'd reboot spidey....

update-on-x-men-first-class

Josh Schwartz , who created Gossip Girl, The O.C., and Chuck has been hired by 20th Century Fox to script X-Men: First Class. Reportedly, the new project will focus on a new and younger set of mutants instead of the older mutants of the prior three films. X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner will produce First Class along with X-Men: The Last Stand co-screenwriter Simon Kinberg.

i think they should reboot the whole series, for me the storyline was poor

i cant really blame them because they had huge budget issues and kept changing the storylines. they got the final movie storyline wrong for me and should of went with the same main plot but different start and beginning.

they had potential to make about 5-6 movies in the series leading up to everything and then the final movie with the main bad guy in the whole series, not sure how to spell his name but it is something like apocalypse.

first movie is good and done well. second and third were just wrong for me in terms of storyline.
