They're not the size of birds, big, but not bird-big.
However, unlike bees, wasps, hornets, and the like can sting repeatedly. With regards to this species, only a a dozen or so stings can cause death, and this isn't from being allergic. If one is allergic then of course only one sting is necessary to cause death.
I saw this clip 2 or 3 years back when it firest aired on some nature show on t.v.
