Black Society Trilogy

If you’re a fan of Miike, these come recommended. All three films are solid works which show how he’s developed as a film-maker, and showcase different facets which prove he’s much more than a sex ‘n’ violence purveyor. Not that these films will be mistaken for Disney flicks, of course. Novices to his offbeat world should probably start with Shinjuku Triad Society, as it’s the most accessible, and work out from there. You’ll soon discover that no-one in the West makes films anything like Takashi Miike.

The first film in this collection does follow in the vein of dead or alive and ichi the killer in its subversive, twisting craziness. However, the second film, Rainy Dog, is much more conventional character study, and far less extreme than the majority of Miike’s work. This film is beautiful and leisurely paced, using the literary device of pathetic fallacy, where the external rain of the environment parallels the emotional states of its central characters. Ley lines is harder hitting with its look at racial bigotry, through its use of sex and violence. All three films are of his best caliber work and solidify the character’s feelings of alienation by their own systems

Shinjuku Triad Society (1995)
Aka: Shinjuku kuroshakai: Chaina mafia sensô

Crime | Drama | Thriller

Tatsuhito Kiriya (Kippei Shiina) and his brother Yoshihito (Kyosuke Izutsu) are from China, and only half Japanese. They fit right into not fitting in, a theme of many of Miike's movies, especially the Black Society Trilogy. Although this trilogy doesn't share stories, it shares common themes, and loneliness and not fitting into mainstream Japanese society is a central theme in the Black Society Trilogy. Kiriya, if I can compare him to an American icon, is a Dirty Harry figure, except not nearly as likable, ethical, or honorable as Clint Eastwood's iconic character. He is a dirty cop who breaks all the rules, and his only good trait is trying to keep his brother safe. Yoshihito seems destined for trouble though, and has found a career as a lawyer for the Dragon Claw Society led by the deadly Wang. Wang controls a human organ trafficking ring that operates from Tawain to Japan. Of course the Dragon Claw Society and the Triads are also in a turf war with the Yakuza, just to keep things bloody and interesting. Wang's interest seem to be principally violence and prostitutes (both male and female). The 'good guy' Kiriya, will stop at nothing to bring down the Dragon Claw leader Wang, including raping the gang leaders girlfriend (Airi Yanagi). Ironically, later she saves Kiriya's life when Kiriya almost becomes an involuntary organ donor himself. You just know from the white robes Wang seems to enjoy wearing, that by the films end, things won't be pretty. White is a great color to show red on, and Miike provides plenty of red. However, I found myself confused through many parts of the plot as to exactly what was going on, and who was working for whom and who was against who.

Criminal Underworld: Rainy Dog (1997)
Aka: Gokudô kuroshakai

Crime | Drama

The film begins with the main character, Yuuji, being fired from his yakuza syndicate. Soon he finds work for another boss solely as a pay-per-hit assassin, killing members of other syndicates. His life starts to become more complicated when an ex-girlfriend or hooker drops his son off at his house. His son, who is dumb, begins to follow him, where the boy witnesses his father assassinate a man. Afterwards the boy follows his father to a whorehouse where he waits outside for his father, eats food from the garbage and befriends a puppy who is chained in the alley. The prostitute and Yuuji develop a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship. Things get much more complicated when the last mark's brother, a lawyer, approaches his brother's yakuza syndicate to request heading the revenge attack on Yuuji. The mark's brother discovers the relationship between the hooker and Yuuji and augment her website to offer a reward for anyone with information about her. Yuuji, girlfriend, are on the way out of town when Yuuji calls his new boss to get a passport. Yuuji's new boss, who knows about the reward and calls the mark's brother, despite the fact that he hired Yuuji. Yuuji can tell by the sound of his bosses voice that he has been betrayed so he leaves their current location and seek refuge at a transgendered homosexual male's apartment who is a friend of the prostitute. While browsing her website on her friend's computer, the prostitute discovers the reward, informs Yuuji and the two begin to wonder where the prostitutes friend went to. They spot the friend out of the window, waiting nervously downstairs and realize she has turned them in for money. Yuuji sends his girlfriend and son together to a train station and gets revenge on his boss. Meanwhile his son and girlfriend are captured by the lawyer (the mark's brother) and Yuuji's girlfriend is killed. Yuuji faces off with the lawyer, but gets knocked out due to a distraction by Yuuji's son, after pumping a few bullets into Yuuji, which makes him appear dead. As Yuuji and his son rejoice, an old acqaintance, a low quality and comical hitman, appears and kills Yuuji. After the hitman leaves, the lawyer reawakens and gives Yuuji's son a speech, telling him if Yuuji's son wanted to seek revenge in the future, that he would be ready.

Aka: Ryû ga gotoku: gekijô-ban (2007)

Cult Japanese director Takashi Miike draws inspiration from the popular Playstation 2 title Yakuza for this unhinged tale of underworld violence in Tokyo starring Goro Kishitani and Kazuki Kitamura. When the masked gunmen make their way into the vault only to find that the Tojo gang's ten-million-yen deposit has mysteriously vanished, an already complicated situation gradually starts to spiral out of control. Meanwhile, in another part of town, psychotic yakuza Goro Majima (Kishitani) strikes out on his own to pay a visit to rival gang leader Kazuma Kiryu (Kitamura) and track down the missing mother of adorable youngster Haruka (Natsuo). It seems that Haruka's mother has some valuable information, and Majima is determined to find her at any cost. Now, as Majima makes his way through the neon-lit streets of Tokyo, Satoru (Shun Shioya) and his girlfriend, Yui (Saeko), embark on a bold robbery spree, and South Korean hitman Park (Yoo Gong) prepares to locate and terminate the thieves who absconded with the Toho gang's money.
