Word Workshop
This program was developed to help reinforce the correct usage of words. Customize the program by entering word pairs such as accept/except as well as a sentence using one of these words. Player chooses the correct word and then is asked to type a sentence using the word. The program was specifically designed for the addition of custom content, so the word pairs that come with the program are simply for demonstration. The content can easily be changed at any time using the built-in Word Editor, and each word pair may be turned 'on' or 'off' at any time.
At the end of the play session, the player is given the choice to view and/or print their results. The results will list the player's name, the date, the number of correct answers, a list of any words chosen incorrectly, and the list of sentences written by the player.

We originally made the games for our own children, they liked it so much we decided to share it with everyone. We enlisted the help of our 4 year old Daughter for the sound effects of the Dragon and the small boy, we had many good times and tons of laughs doing the recording, we sincerely hope your children enjoy it.

The games consist of....
Shape Sorter, where you place the correct shapes in the correct coloured boxes. When the shapes have been correctly sorted a short animation play's along with a short sound file. Teaches the child about 'Drag & Drop'
Puzzle game, there are small pictures that you place in a frame to make the picture shown on the screen (only one image to choose from in this version). When the pictures have been correctly placed a short sound file is played and the screen flashes different colours. Teaches the child about 'Drag & Drop' and mouse control
Spelling Game, 6 words (can be redefined by an adult) that need to be spelt correctly, if the word is wrongly spelt there is a small animation and sound file played. Similarly if the word is correctly spelt a different animation of a small child is shown and a different sound file played. Teaches the child about the keyboard layout and Spellings
Maths Game. Maths can be fun, in this simply addition game, you have to count the number of Teddy Bears shown
(along with the numbers). The object of the game is to make 'Cassie' the dragon sneeze, a correct answer will result in the Dragon sneezing, n incorrect answer will result in, well something else, we can't give it all away here J. Teaches the child about the numerical layout of the keyboard and maths.
Scribbles. Is a simple drawing game with colours, shapes and freehand drawing, The idea of the game is mouse skills, colour recognition and fun. Once the child has finished their drawing they can press a single button to make the current image the Windows default wallpaper. There are also 10 different tunes that play randomly in the background while they are drawing.
Stomping Game. In this section the child learns about mouse control, hand to eye co-ordination. The object of the game is to stomp as many spiders as you can to gain as many points as you can, along the way the child learns about hand to eye co-ordination and mouse skills, just all out good fun.
There is a set up screen for use by adults where you can enter the child name which is used throughout the program and you can change any of the 4 sets of spellings to your own tastes.
With all of the games there is a strong emphasis on fun, the child will want to play the game because it's fun, not because they are learning, and they will certainly have fun. We removed the idea of 'Wrong & Correct' and replaced them with more entertaining methods, for example in the Maths Game we have 'Happy Faces' & 'Sad or Mad Faces', who cares whether your child gets the answer correct or wrong, fun is the main objective of the game with learning as back ground task, obviously the child will want to get the answers correct to see more 'Happy Faces'.
All of the buttons are over sized and the fonts made bigger so that a child can use the games easily once they have been shown whet they are supposed to do.

Along the way, you'll help them solve problems, figure out puzzles and play games with their friends Benny the bull, Isa the iguana, and Tico the squirrel! Watch out for the Grumpy Old Troll and that sneaky fox, Swiper! With Dora, even returning books to the Library becomes an adventure!
Nearly any fan of Dora the Explorer's TV show will enjoy this structured "adventure" in which players help the program's intrepid heroine achieve the noble goal of returning her library books on time. While not exactly suspenseful, the program is ideal for children ages 3 to 5 who are just learning how to use a computer. Over a soundtrack of catchy Latin music, the player helps Dora and her perky friends overcome a series of seven obstacles, and collects sticker prizes along the way. The program is unlikely to hold the attention of more computer-savvy kids as it is very predictable, structured, and slow paced. But its emphasis on teamwork and opportunities to practice color, shape, and number recognition--not to mention learn a little Spanish--make it worthwhile.
Only a minute or so into the program most adults will find Dora's incessant cheerfulness a bit old as she shouts out a steady stream of encouragement. But for kids, this aspect may not be so hard to take. Dora's pack of friends from the TV shows all appear in the program, along with the Fiesta Trio, a dancing frog-snail-and-bug band.
The seven games that make up the plot of the program emphasize basic skills and concepts. They include locating Dora's books by color, sorting through her backpack for objects, and solving simple pattern-recognition problems. There are three levels of difficulty--each varies according to how much Spanish is used and how advanced the number and pattern problems are. One drawback is that if a child gets stuck there is no way to ask for specific help or hints. A useful feature, however, is the ability to stop and start the program where the player left off, and save individual programs for up to three different players.
While kids used to more fast-paced programs may quickly get bored, young children--especially those who are already fans of the TV show--will have fun developing their mouse skills and putting their problem-solving abilities to the test. --Molly Masland

Widget Workshop is a neat computerized "science kit" that lets kids devise gadgets, perform experiments, and design puzzles by using various parts. Like most other Maxis "toys," Widget Workshop is more of a sandbox simulation than a game: kids can combine various parts - such as timers, switches, logic and electrical components - and then just observe what happens. This way, kids are encouraged to experiment and be creative, but at the same time the wide range of widgets and possibility means they will likely seek your help to extract the program's full potential.

The interface is extremely easy to use. All the parts are shown on-screen, and they can be dragged and dropped on to the "workspace" area. Mouse clicks are all that is required to connect them all. For example, you can click a keypad widget, connect it to the the solar system "super part," attach a "multiplier" to it. Finally, push the green "Go" button to see what happens. Going through the tutorial once or twice is recommended for the younger kids, so they know what each button does.

If creating their own inventions aren't enough, kids can try to solve the game's 25 challenging puzzles, or conduct 30 pre-defined experiments described in the "Workshop Activities book." The wide range of widgets - ranging from everyday objects like timers and switches, to more complex equipments like the magnifier, logic gates, and thermometer - means that kids will learn a wide array of scientific principles when they are having fun. Logic, gravity, sound, light, weather, electricity, computer programming and arithmetic are some of the subjects kids will learn without knowing it. Definitely one of the best ways to learn about math and science, Widget Workshop is highly recommended for kids of all ages.

Fisher-Price Big Action: Construction will delight kids by letting them operate a big crane, take care of the dump truck, blast rocks with dynamite, build structures, use a wrecking ball to demolish houses, or make a Hoagie sandwich at a virtual construction site. Certificates and collector cards are printed from the foreman's trailer, where the options screen is accessed.

Each activity awards the player a seemingly unlimited number of collector cards upon successful completion, though some have the same background with different words. A group of eight cards can be printed, simply by clicking and dragging them onto a form. The six areas in the game contain certificates, which are completed by cutting out and pasting four cards collected from each activity. Certificate completion has no effect on the open-ended nature of the game.

Separate activities are associated with each area. In the big crane area, for example, items are picked up and dumped in the hopper to clear the area. A list at the bottom of the screen shows what items must be cleared to win a card, but dumping incorrect items isn't penalized. The crane's bucket is controlled with the mouse by selecting the forward and back buttons for movement and a blue lever to pick up items and dump them into the hopper.

Kids help Smitty maintain and fix the dump truck by pumping up the tires when they go flat, filling the tank with gas, and cleaning the windshield. Each activity, once completed, earns a card. Unfortunately, playing the limited activities in the dump truck area becomes repetitive too quickly after several plays.

The blasting area focuses on using bundled sticks of dynamite to explode canyon walls and uncover items. Funny animated clips show boulders destroying houses, being served like tennis balls by the Statue of Liberty, and even hitting the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Uncovering the correct item earns the player a card, but a slight drawback is that many of the items seem to always be in the same place in the quarry with each new game.

When it's time for lunch, players meet their fellow workers or construct a monster Hoagie at the lunch truck by scrolling through a list of ingredients including food items like hot dogs, cheese and burgers, as well as inedible items such as bricks, rivets, saws and hammers. The sandwich is built by clicking on each desired item, and when made successfully, earns another collectible card.

The building construction site includes options to build from a plan or imagination, though only planned buildings earn cards. There are nine different buildings, including a space station, Victorian house, castle, and igloo. It's the most involved activity in the game, as the player must first clear the site, dig a hole for the foundation, and then pour concrete. After the steelworkers build the frame, the player places rivets, and sections of the building are put together by matching them with the correct shapes in the framework. Finishing touches, such as doors, windows and other items, are then placed on the building and a copy of the picture can be printed. This activity is fun and involved, and offers good replay with options to change colors and accessories with each new play.

Most activities are well designed and have enough variation to ensure some replay, though the dump truck activity is an exception. The number of cards and certificates is unlimited, thus parents should allow for as much space on their refrigerator and walls as possible to display prizes won and printed. Controls are simple and easy to learn, mostly point-and-click or point-and-drag. Each of the characters in the game treats the player like a member of the work crew, instilling a real sense of accomplishment.

Don't buy this expecting a music theory class--there's not a treble clef to be found unless you count the one on Ms. Frizzle's skirt--but for a child who's all ears, curious about how tape recorders work and why bats squeak, it's sure to hit just the right note.

Though this is a fairly large age gap to bridge, the content on Pingu: A Barrel of Fun achieves it effortlessly. For the younger end of the age group, there are shape-sorting, number- and letter-matching, sound- and colour-recognition puzzles to crack. For five- and six-year-olds, the "hard" rather than "easy" skill option will give plenty to amuse. For example, in the easy letter game, players must choose the initial letter of a given everyday object, whereas in the hard version, players must spell the whole word. (Hover over the letter and you get the name of the sound; once you've placed it, the voice-over tells you the name of the letter--an extremely sound educational approach.)

The sound game, a real highlight of the package, is an aural pelmonism, where players must match sounds to make the symbols disappear. In the harder version, the organ grinder plays a tune and players must match the sounds in the correct order. Though most sounds are everyday (telephone, cow, pig) there are some more exotic sounds (lion) that children may not recognise, but they can match them to the pictures shown.

For older players, there is a selection of five games to choose from, each with an easy, medium and hard skill option. In "Ice Flow", you must get Pingu across the water without wetting him so he can deliver birthday presents: a kind of basic Pingu Frogger! "Snow Maze" is reminiscent of a simple Pac-Man, but the added bonus is picking objects up along the way that you can build up into your own original picture at the end. "Fish Tennis" is bordering on the surreal--a kind of elementary tennis reminiscent of the original Atari game, but with Penguins not paddles and fish not balls! "Building Blocks" sets players a puzzle not unlike those in the Krypton Factor--matching shapes together to build up an overall object within a template. In the easy version, each shape is cut into three pieces; in the medium version it is four or five pieces and in the harder one, seven or eight. The only let-down to the game section is "Music Time", a recording synthesiser which allows you to play nursery rhyme tunes, sing along or record your own composition. Though the idea is great, the mouse dexterity required to make it work effectively is probably beyond the target age group, and the resulting sound quality on a home PC is poor.

That said, this is a minor blip in an otherwise fantastic package. It is easy to load, has great graphics that perfectly reproduce the TV programme, and while younger players may require supervision and help, they will still enjoy their favourite character, even if mastering the finer points of the package is beyond them. Whether your child is a fan of Pingu or not, there is plenty for him or her to get their teeth into From early learning to elementary gaming skills, Pingu: A Barrel of Fun will definitely last the three years of the target age range and players will continue learning all the time. And, once your children has turned six, a simple and effective Uninstall option means your hard drive won't be clogged up forever.

The Computer Classroom series is a vital tool for Australian educators.

Each level contains 30+ units of interactive learning employing graphics, animation and sound. Students self-select from a numbered index and may repeat units at any time.

The units correspond with the age appropriate National Profiles Key Learning Areas (KLAs) in Mathematics and English and are designed to assist understanding and reinforce the learning process. Any unit may be repeated as often as desired. Each level represents approximately 15 hours of interactive learning and covers the equivalent of 1 year's work. Become a History Explorer is an excellent CD-ROM in this series, which will turn any child into a budding historian. It's aimed at children aged 6-10 years old and encourages them to find out about eight exciting periods in history, through games, quizzes and information screens.

Children will love the challenge of collecting the pieces of the time trail, so that they can rescue the history professor who has been trapped in time by the time fugitive. Children must travel in the time machine and explore each historical world in order to find all the pieces and become a history explorer. There is an excellent journal in which children can record their travels. This would help to consolidate what they have learnt about each period in history. Having answered questions along the way children are rewarded with stickers, which are kept in their journal. There are also activities to do, for example, design a coat of arms, which can be saved in the journals, along with photos and other souvenirs. There is also an excellent index menu that allows children to view information screens on a very wide range of topics. This would be particularly good to use if children were having trouble answering any of the quiz questions.
