About Jean Marie Auel
Jean Marie Untinen Auel is an American writer, better known as Jean M. Auel. She is best known for her Earth's Children books, a series of historical fiction novels set in prehistoric Europe that explores interactions of Cro-Magnon people with Neanderthals. Her books have sold 34 million copies world-wide in many translations. Bibliography: Earth's Children 1. The Clan of the Cave Bear (1980) 2. The Valley of Horses (1982) 3. The Mammoth Hunters (1985) 4. The Plains of Passage (1990) 5. The Shelters of Stone (2002) ________________________________________ Earths's Children 01 - The Clan of the Cave Bear (IMG:http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/1844/9780609610978.jpg) When her parents are killed by an earthquake, 5-year-old Ayla wanders through the forest completely alone. Cold, hungry, and badly injured by a cave lion, the little girl is as good as gone until she is discovered by a group who call themselves the Clan of the Cave Bear. This clan, left homeless by the same disaster, have little interest in the helpless girl who comes from the tribe they refer to as the "Others." Only their medicine woman sees in Ayla a fellow human, worthy of care. She painstakingly nurses her back to health--a decision that will forever alter the physical and emotional structure of the clan. Although this story takes place roughly 35,000 years ago, its cast of characters could easily slide into any modern tale. The members of the Neanderthal clan, ruled by traditions and taboos, find themselves challenged by this outsider, who represents the physically modern Cro-Magnons. And as Ayla begins to grow and mature, her natural tendencies emerge, putting her in the middle of a brutal and dangerous power struggle. Earth's Children 02 - The Valley of the Horses
(IMG:http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/6485/9780375431760.jpg) This unforgettable odyssey into the distant past carries us back to the awesome mysteries of the exotic, primeval world of The Clan of the Cave Bear, and to Ayla, now grown into a beautiful and courageous young woman. Cruelly cast out by the new leader of the ancient Clan that adopted her as a child, Ayla leaves those she loves behind and travels alone through a stark, open land filled with dangerous animals but few people, searching for the Others, tall and fair like herself. The short summer gives her little time to look, and when she finds a sheltered valley with a herd of hardy steppe horses, she decides to stay and prepare for the long glacial winter ahead. Living with the Clan has taught Ayla many skills but not real hunting. She finally knows she can survive when she traps a horse, which gives her meat and a warm pelt for the winter, but fate has bestowed a greater gift, an orphaned foal with whom she develops a unique kinship. One winter extends to more; she discovers a way to make fire more quickly and a wounded cave lion cub joins her unusual family, but her beloved animals don’t fulfill her restless need for human companionship. Then she hears the sound of a man screaming in pain. She saves tall, handsome Jondalar, who brings her a language to speak and an awakening of love and desire, but Ayla is torn between her fear of leaving her valley and her hope of living with her own kind. Earths's Children 03 - The Mammoth Hunters
(IMG:http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/9955/9780375431777.jpg) In this third of the acclaimed Earth's Children novels, Ayla, the independent heroine of THE CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR and THE VALLEY OF HORSES, sets out from the valley on Whinney, the horse she tamed. With her is Jondalar, tall, handsome and yellow-haired, the man she nursed back to health and came to love. Together they meet the Manutoi -- the Mammoth Hunters -- people like Ayla. Among them is Ranec, an artistic, magnetic master carver of ivory. Ayla finds herself torn between Ranec and Jondalar, the latter a powerful lover but insecure and wildly jealous. It is not until the great mammoth hunt, when Ayla's life is threatened, that a fateful decision is made. Earths's Children 05 - Shelters of Stone
(IMG:http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/224/1587889897.jpg) After their epic journey across Europe, Ayla and Jondalar have reached his home, the Ninth Cave of the Zelandonii, the old stone age settlement in the region known today as southwest France. Jondalar's family greet him warmly, but they are initially wary of the beautiful young woman he has brought back, with her strange accent and her tame wolf and horses. Ayla has much to learn from the Zelandonii and much to teach them. She is intrigued by their clothes, their crafts, and their home, and wants to learn their customs and the ways that they live, so that she will fit in. She is delighted when she meets Zelandoni, the spiritual leader of her people, a fellow healer with whom she can share medicinal skills and knowledge. The Zelandonii are surprised to learn she was found and raised by the Clan, the ones that they call flatheads and think of as animals, and are skeptical when she tells them they are people. After the rigors and dangers that have characterized her extraordinary life so far, Ayla yearns for peace and tranquility, to be Jondalar's mate and to have children. But her unique spiritual gifts cannot be ignored, and even as she gives birth to her eagerly-awaited child, she is coming to accept that she has a greater role to play in the destiny of the Zelandonii.
